-Oh fuck me, where is my shirt? Mum, mum, where is my white button up shirt? We will be late.
-I'm ironing it. Why do you have to be there that early anyways?
-I don't know. But Rhett will kill me if we are late. The choir opens the concert and then it's the band with my solo, so he has to be there on time.
-Okay, calm down, it's ready.
She hands me the warm piece of clothing and I wear it immediately. I grab my reed case and shove it in my pocket.
-Don't arrive too late alright? I have a solo part.
-Don't worry; we will be there to see you, like always.
I wave and get out of the room and heading outside. Rhett is already in the car waiting for me, he gives me a judgmental look as I go in.
-Sorry babe. I hope I wasn't too late.
-Just a bit. Do you have everything? All your bassoon thingies?
-Yes. Ready to go.
He starts the engine and heads to our High school, where our concert is about to take place. I and Link are in the band while Rhett and Jess are in the choir. My heart is thundering in my chest, I haven't played for a crowd in a while. Rhett senses my anxiety and strokes my knee with his thumb. He looks so good in the white button up shirt and black pants. The heat from his palm calms me down a bit. I slip one arm out of the window messing around with the cold air. It's a beautiful May evening.
I look on the boy next to me and I can't believe that time has passed so quickly. We are together for six months and two weeks and I still have this funny feeling in my stomach when I look at him. Despite that he is focusing on the road I get lost on his green blue eyes. For one moment everything fades away, the only thing that matters is those green seas. He is so handsome. I bite my lip. He notices me and smiles. My knees go weak.
-What are you thinking about babe?
-Nothing....I just got distracted.
He leads his hand on my inner thigh and rubs the area gently. I close my eyes and take in the feeling of his hands on me. It sends shivers from my ears to my toes. I'm on the verge of jumping on him but his sudden turn tears up my plans. We arrived.
I climb out of the car and follow him inside. We enter the spacious place. Many peers dressed like us are gathered in the middle of the room. Two of them are Link and Jess, chatting with big smiles on their faces. Jess looks amazing, she has lost weight but what did the big change was her built up confidence. The way she was smiling, moving. I am so proud of her.
We approach them and Rhett gives Link a pat on the shoulder. I and Jess hugged.
-Maritina, the maestro wants us in five minutes.
-Okay.
-And Rhett the choir has to be all gathered in ten.
He wraps an arm around my shoulders more out of habit than anything else. He is so tall; I am barely touching his armpit. We share our excitement and anxiety for the concert but before we are done, it's already time to split up. I kiss Rhett firmly and whisper to his ear.
-You have the sexiest voice ever, you will be great. You sing like an angel.
-And you have the most talented hands I have ever seen. You will do great.
-Jerk.
I say and follow Link to the back where every other member of the band is taking their place. Loud noises and voices are coming for all over the place. Our conductor came in and everyone went silent. I sat on my seat nervously, waiting for further instructions.
-Go get your instruments kids, we don't have much time, once we tune, the choir sings and we play. So move your legs fast.
I run to the small room where the instruments were held and search for the bassoon. When I finally found it I put the pieces together and make sure everything was alright. I walked outside with confidence taking my place in the middle. After the tuning the place was already full.
A little weird feeling appeared in my stomach but it went away when I saw Rhett on stage. Because he was so tall he was way in the back but he was looking awfully good. When I see him singing is like I'm in a paradise. It's not just his excellent voice is his body language and expression. He enjoys it. I feel taken over by him, even though I can't see him very well. Link taps me on the shoulder.
-Hey their song is about to end, shouldn't you have the bassoon somewhere around you?
-Shit, you are right.
I run to take it from a chair I had placed it carefully and get in my line. When they stopped singing we walk on the stage and take our places. My solo is the opening. Maestro gives me the signal to stand up and go stand beside him. Every single pair of eyes is on me. I can tell that Rhett is looking at me too. I recognize his stare. I carefully put my lips around my reed and press gently. With the signal I let air travel in the instrument. Every little noise disappears; the band is playing quietly so I can be heard. The feeling is overwhelming. The sound is beautiful. I play for Rhett tonight, this is for him.
When my part was done I sit back down after bowing. I look over at Rhett. He smiles at me and does the thumbs up at me. My heart melts.
When the concert was done I run to the backstage to meet Rhett. I jump on him, wrapping my arms around him. I find myself swaying right and left, touching on his strong abs and thighs.
-You were amazing baby girl. I'm so proud of you.
-You were looking awesome from up there. It was awesome. You sounded absolutely fantastic.
-Thanks babe.
He puts me down and runs his thumb on my lips.
-You have talented mouth too.
-Dork.
I laugh and go with Link to put our instruments on our cases. Once I'm done I go back to Rhett who is waiting for me. We walk back to our parents together. They are standing in the middle of the room talking. When they see us they smile. My mother hugs me.
-You were breathtaking sweetie.
She kisses my forehead and my dad pulls me into his arms.
-You were okay little monkey.
-Dad.
I laugh and stand between them.
Rhett's mum hugs him too and his dad taps him on the shoulder. Is funny how taller he is than both of them. His dad is 5'10.
-Congratulations darling.
Ms Diane shakes my hand and so does Mr James. After that we get back to our cars and drive home. Such a beautiful night, The stars are bright and the moon is full. I miss him already.
