Maya POV
It was 9 o'clock and I knew I did not want to go home right now.
I was parked outside my apartment building weighing my options.
Seeing my mom would make things worse. She would question me right off the bat and that was the last thing I wanted.
However, if I waited to go home until I thought she was asleep then I'd still be questioned. My mom can't go to bed unless I'm home so anytime would be confrontation time.
Suddenly, a light bulb went off in my head. I could just sleep over Riley's house.
No risk, no confrontations, no dishes. Also, I could just cry over what happened in person!
I dialed Riley's number and waited for her to pick up.
"Peaches! I was waiting to hear from you! Now, what was so important you had to leave earlier?"
"Riles, can I sleepover tonight?"
"Is this about the phone call? Oh my- Maya, is everything fine?"
"Eh, not really. But my house and people in it are fine, I just.. don't feel like going home tonight.."
"Yeah, come on over."
I drove over to Riley's and climbed my way up to her window with my emergency overnight bag.
I went to knock on the window, but it was already open.
I threw my bag into the room and climbed in after it.
"Why'd you come through my window if my parents don't care?" Riley asked from the floor in front of her bed where she was painting her nails.
"Not as fun... Why'd you question me if you left it open for me to come through?" I shut the window and locked the latch.
"I expected it." She screwed the nail polish bottle closed and patted the spot on the carpet next to her. "Come, tell Mama Riley all your problems, cause you got a lot.."
"Oh you sure know how to cheer a girl up!"
"Riley, we're watching a movie downstairs if-" Mrs. Matthews barged into the room. "Hi Maya.. you staying over?"
"Yes, we have plenty girl talk to girl talk about."
"Well, leftovers from dinner are in the fridge if you're hungry."
"Thanks Mrs. Matthews!" I called after her as she shut the door.
"Okay.. spill."
So, I told Riley about the whole "baseball practice temper tantrum" without needing a single tissue.
"Woah. You go girl! Also, I'm sorry Maya," She hugged me and then, I started to cry, "Also, please don't cry."
That only mad me cry more.
"Also, this doesn't sound like the Lucas I know. I think we both know that and as much as I'm for the whole sticking your ground and giving him your piece of mind, are you sure about this one? I mean, Farkle saw him in the park with that girl and it could've looked bad but a girlfriend? You really think Lucas would do that."
I honestly hadn't thought about it, "I don't know Riley but I was really hurt by it. By all of it."
"You know him better than anyone at this point. You think about it. But I think that you should give him the benefit of the doubt. Talk to him?"
I knew she was right. I hated it when she was right. "Fine, I'll talk to him."
I pulled out my phone and looked in my messages for my recent conversation with Lucas.
At that moment I received a text from Lucas:
'We need to talk.'
"Well someone is ahead of me.." I showed the message to Riley who continued to paint her nails.
"In person."
'Huh?"
"Tell him you wanna talk in person. It's the only way to stop all this miscommunication." she rolled her eyes.
Yes. Riley. Riley rolled her eyes.
"Riley Matthews.. did you just roll your eyes at me?" I gasped and clutched my heart.
"No.... Of course not. I rolled my eyes at miscommunication.."
"Mhmm.."
"It's a darned thing!"
I laughed and replied to the text:
'Yes, we need to talk in person.'
He replied almost instantly:
'Ok, tomorrow, Topanga's, 2.'
I didn't respond and got quite angry at myself for thinking it was hot that he was being so authoritative.
"Tomorrow. Topanga's. 2." I said mockingly.
"It's a date!" Riley clapped.
"Ha! No. Not a date. Definitely not a date. This is gonna be an argument."
"Yes, an argument that you must look hot for.. Oh!" She jumped up and skipped to her closet.
"Riley, Can I ask you a question?"
"You can ask me anything Peaches!" She called from her closet.
"Why are you so on board for me and Lucas even though you dated him fro three years?"
She continued looking through her clothes and humming. "Aha! You got your leather jacket?"
"Yes, but-"
"Here.. wear this tomorrow."
She pulled out my favorite red dress. The silk, slip dress that I made Riley buy with her emergency credit card, that she loved, but wouldn't be allowed dead out of the house in. Although, I knew she secretly danced around her room in it because it made her feel dangerous. The part of me she kept in her closet.
The part of her I kept in my closet were those mustard colored boot cut jeans.
"Wear this with your leather jacket and some boot and Volia! Lucas will be wrapped around your finger."
"Are you sure? Your special dress.."
"This is gonna be a lucky day for you.. I can feel it.."
"Thanks Riles"
"And as for your question. I'm okay with it because you are the two people I care about most in the world. You're also the only two people I know in this world who can look at each other with the same amount of love my parents look at each other. That's not something you should lose."
"Thank you Riley, for everything."
"Hey.. what are best friends for?"
We hugged for a long time.
"Who knew my parents would give birth to Lauren?"
