Lucas POV
Woah.
Everything feel into place.
All the teasing, nicknames, and squirming.
That was nothing like Texas....... then again that was in eighth grade and holding hands was considered a big deal. But now, Woah.
I knew I liked Maya in that moment. Not because she kissed me unlike I have ever been kissed before, heck, Riley would be nervous every time I wanted to give her a peck. We never actually made out before.
I had done it back in Texas.....
Maybe Texas Lucas is the make out type.
But that was 6th grade. And this was different.
But Maya was drunk, she didn't mean
it.
I did. I meant it.
Maya tasted like peppermint.
And she was so small.
I had always thought Maya was wrong for me, and that she would have been perfect for me back in Texas.
But that's why I always came back to her, I can't change who I am. That's why I always go back to my 'alter ego' when in reality, who I am now, 'Mr. Moral Compass' is my real alter ego.

I wanted Maya. I needed her. She was the only one who knew what it was like to be a little broken, and to have a dark past. She knew how to control me.
She was essential to me.
Maya isn't easy, she isn't going to be easy to get. She wouldn't do that to Riley.
I was in too deep by now, I just didn't know it.

"Lucas!" Zay snapped me out of my trance.
"Yeah, Yeah" I pretended I was listening.
"So your response to 'What were you and Maya talking about for ten minutes?' is yeah?"
"Uh yes, that's code for none of your business." I tried to play it off.
"No, that's code for a quickie!" Zay cracked up at his own joke.
"Ha. Ha. Very funny."
He looked around at the cafe. Half the kids had left but the ones that stayed were still going strong.
Maya and Riley walked in from the back with candles and lighters. Maya motioned over to the cake, asking for my help silently.
I got up and walked to the cake.
"Can you get the cake cutter from the back please? It's in the closet." Maya directed me while she carefully placed the candles.
I stomped into the back and noticed a note on the closet door.
We need to talk, stay afterwards to close (unless it's too late after your curfew). PS I still need the cake cutter.
That was quick. I smiled. Talking. That's good right?
Wait.
As I drifted back to the party they already started singing so I lightly joined in.
Farkle blew out his candle and we started to cut the cake.
By the time I was finished eating my cake, Zay, Maya and I were the only ones left in the shop.
"Well I'm leaving," Zay got up and started cutting up more cake to take home, "Now, y'all don't anything you wouldn't do around your mommas."
