Not even five minutes later Josh and Jenna came bursting through the door and sat down on either side of me.
"Hey, what's going on?" Jenna asked in her gentle voice that she used during times like this.
I groaned in response. Jenna sighed and put a hand on my knee.
"What can we do to help?" Josh asked.
I shook my head. "I have no clue."
"What do you usually do in these kinds of situations?"
"Ask Jenna."
"I usually just sit with him and keep talking to him. The talking tends to distract him from whatever's going on inside his head." She said.
"What do you usually talk about?" Dr. Glenn asked.
"I usually just talk about what's been going on in my life or tell him stupid things that I've done with my friends."
"And that helps?" Josh asked.
"Seems to."
"Should we try that, then?" Mom asked.
"It's worth a shot." Dr. Glenn said.
"Okay... Well, yesterday after we all went home from Josh's place, I tripped and fell into a puddle, and then once I was stood up and had walked ahead a little, some jerk came speeding past and splashed me again." Jenna rambled on.
After Jenna had finished her stories, Josh took a shot. "Okay, so a few weeks ago, Jordan and me were gonna jump out and scare Abby and Ashley, and as we were about to jump out at them, a bird pooped on Jordan and he started flicking the poop off his shoulder and at me instead. And during all of this, the girls obviously heard us and found us, but instead of just walking away they recorded us. They still have it on Ashley's phone."
After Josh and Jenna rambled back and forth for a while, I started to feel better; the voices were quieter now. I sat up a little and stopped pounding at my temples. Not long after that I started laughing with them, joining in on what they were saying and making jokes with them.
"Feeling better now, Tyler?" Dr. Glenn asked.
I nodded.
"That's good. Are you alright to continue our session or do you still need a few minutes?"
"I should be fine now." I answered. Honestly, I didn't want to continue our session; I wanted to keep laughing and having fun with my friends.
She smiled at me and politely shooed everyone else out of the room. She then helped me up off the ground and back into the chair I was sitting in across from her.
Once we got back into the swing of things, she started asking the questions she usually did, scribbling down random things that I said, the usual. "Do your friends usually help you during an episode like that?" She asked.
I nodded, looking down at my feet.
"What's wrong, Tyler?"
"Nothing."
"We both know that's not true. What's wrong?"
"I just really don't like being here. Its not you, it's just the setting. I've never liked it here."
She nodded and wrote something down again.
"What are you writing? I don't mean to be rude, but I just always see you writing stuff down after I say something that has nothing to do with anything."
"Well, what I just wrote was a note to try to make it more comfortable for you here. I don't want my patients feeling out of the norm when they're here. Other times I just jot down key words when you talk about something that can help us help you or something truthful or something that's close to you."
I nodded and looked down at my feet again.
"Our times almost up for today. I'm going to get your mother quick to discuss a medication change."
"Again? We just did one last month!"
She laughed. "Not changing types this time, just dosage."
I groaned and sunk down in my chair. Dr. Glenn came back in with mom who sat beside me.
"I'm thinking maybe we change the dosage of a few pills?" The doctor started. Mom nodded and leaned forward a little.
The doctor started listing the pills and saying which ones she was gonna change; I zoned out.
"Sounds good. Thank you so much, Dr. Glenn." Mom smiled as she stood up. I stood up too and followed her out to the waiting room where we saw Josh and Jenna waiting for me. I smiled at them and walked ahead a little to meet them.
"You okay?" Jenna asked.
"Yeah, I'm better now." I smiled.
"She change anything this time?" Josh asked.
"Upped the meds a little."
He nodded. "Wanna catch a ride back with us?"
I glanced at mom and saw her nod. "Sure."
"You going back to school?" Jenna asked.
"Probably. How much is even left of school?"
"Like half an hour."
"Is there even a point of me going back then?" I turned to mom.
"Not really. You can just go back home. I have to get back to work though, and I'll need you to watch your siblings when they get home."
I nodded and walked out the door with Josh and Jenna. "Are you guys going back to school? You could come keep me company instead." I joked.
"I have a spare anyways." Josh said.
"Me too." Jenna added.
"Let's go hang out at my place till my brothers and sister get home then."
They both nodded in agreement, so we went back to my place.
