Exactly

He crossed his arms and leaned on a wooden wall in the intersection between outside and the dinner. He looked down at the ground sorrowfully, barely hearing the Creatures’ argument through the glass doors. He looked up to see James and Sly yelling at each other, with Seamus probably trying to calm James down.

He didn’t know why either of them was so pissed off at the other, and he wasn’t sure he wanted to know anymore, either. He just waited for them to calm down and enter so they could finally eat and get this outing over with.

He heard the door swing open and the yelling suddenly booming clearly outside as Jordan and Dan walked next to him but he didn’t bother to try and listen.

The entrance closed again, muffling the loud argument outside once again. It ended with James angrily flipping off Sly and stomping inside, Seamus close behind telling him what he had said or did was uncalled for.

“Let’s just fucking go. If that idiot ruins his chances, I won’t be my fault,” James grumbled harshly, glaring behind him from the corner of his eye.

As they really entered the restaurant, Eddie finally made his way to them, following them in silence. They waited for someone to attend to them and, soon enough, a cheery mild-aged woman wearing a black uniform walked up to them with five menus.

“Hello, table for six?” she guessed with a polite grin.

“Yeah,” Jordan confirmed.

“Okay, right this way please,” she said, walking through the tables and booths.

James was right when he said it was a fancy place, not only did the food smell delicious but the restaurant itself looked sophisticated. The lights were dimed and scented candles were light on the mahogany tables, creating a romantic or calming atmosphere.

The kind woman stopped at a half circle booth, isolated from the many people dinning there.

“Is this okay or would you prefer a table?” the lady questioned.

“This is fine, thanks,” Dan assured.

She nodded and placed the six menus next to the salt and pepper shakers.

“I’ll be back shortly to see what drinks you would like,” she informed, leaving to attend to other arriving people.

The all sat in their seats in silence, Dan and Jordan on one end followed by James, Seamus, Eddie, and lastly, him. They each took a menu in silence, tension from the previous fight still present.

As he looked at the choices, he couldn’t help but notice each of his friends glance at him every few seconds, never once at the same time, as if they were trying to stare something out of him. The staring was making him rather uncomfortable and after a while, he just got sick of it.

He put down his menu abruptly, his glare shifting onto every one. “Would you guys stop with the staring already?”

They all mumbled apologies and looked back at their menu, Aleks doing the same. After a few moments of silence, Kootra was the one to place his menu on the table.

“What are we doing? We came here to have a good time and now everyone is mad at someone except Dan and me.”

“I’m not mad, I don’t even know why James and Eddie were fighting,” he notified.

As he said this, he noticed James’ familiar angry face return, glaring at Eddie once more with nothing but pure annoyance.

“Exactly.” The word was spat with vibrant irritation, a type Aleks hadn’t heard from James since they met.

He only saw Sly scowl back; clearly not amused with James’ attempt to prove he was right in whatever argument they were having.

He hated this; why couldn’t they just laugh and joke around like they usually did? That’s what made him so happy about being with the guys, being happy. If he wanted fighting, he would’ve just listened to his adoptive parents fights before their breakup.

Before he could actually vocalize his thoughts, Seamus had beaten him to it.

“James, babe, I love you but, could you please just stop? You proved your point, now let’s just enjoy our dinner, okay?” the blonde asked, giving his cheek a quick peck.

Aleks saw James’ gaze soften as he looked at his Irish boyfriend and the corners of his mouth twitch into a small grin.

“Okay. I love you too,” he responded gleefully, kissing his lips shortly.

As Seamus leaned his head on James’ shoulder with a love-struck twinkle in his eyes and a joyful grin to his face, Jordan clasped his hands together in satisfaction.

“Now that that’s somewhat settled, how about we get to know you better, Aleks? We don’t know much except for the… bluntly obvious things.”

He looked at teen with the red cap with an unimpressed look; in all honesty, it wasn’t the most original idea.

“What do you want to know?”

He shrugged and Dan was the one to ask him a question instead. “Where are you from? Why’d you move here?”

“I’m Russian and I lived there for a while. Then I got sent to a shitty adoption place in… Massachusetts, I think. I got adopted by a couple and, as time went by; they started fighting a lot and eventually broke up. I stayed with my ‘dad’ and, when they broke up, he started drinking a lot. Eventually, he just decided to move here and drag me with him.”

He tried staying out of the important details and only reveal what was needed to answer Dan’s question.

“So, you’re adopted?” Koots asked.

“Yeah,” he confirmed simply.

“What happened that sent you to an adoption place?”

He sighed remorsefully; he had accepted to answer their questions, but he hadn’t expected them to ask so personal ones. This was beginning to go on subjects he knew he didn’t want to talk about.

“My mom died giving birth to me and my dad died when his heart gave out,” he informed as quickly and as simply as possible.

“Oh. Where did you get the ears, then?” Jordan whispered to make sure no one would hear.

He remained silent for this one; he didn’t want to go through all the horrible stages of his life again, he wanted to forget, grow past them. But here he was, explaining all of them to the group of odd-ball commentators he called his friends.

From the corner of his eye, he could see Eddie look at him worriedly. He knew. He knew just how he got them and just how much he didn’t want to talk about it.

“Can we just… not talk about this now?” he inquired in a shaky whisper.

“Oh, sure. I’m really sorry if I touched a sensitive subject, I really didn’t mean to. I just get really curious sometimes, sorry.”

Hadn’t Jordan heard that curiosity killed the cat? He tried his best to twitch his mouth into a smile, succeeding enough to get a small grin, reminding himself that everyone gets curious and that it wasn’t himself. The events of that afternoon proved that.

“It’s fine. I just… I need to go. I’ll be back in a few, tell the waitress I want today’s special if she comes,” he announced in a faint whisper, voice cracking in a way that made him sound as if he was about to cry. He got up and walked through the tables and booths, careful to not bump into any of the waiters carrying trays with food.
