After I left my so called "teammates" behind in the dorm room, I wandered the academy's school grounds. I found myself at the library, the one place I can always count on to relax after a long day. I decided to look for my favorite book, Till Death Do Us Part, a book about a man who is revived as a ghost, hunting for a murderer that killed him and his wife. I wandered a bit and found it in the "romance section". As far as I know, it's the farthest thing from romance.
I grabbed it and decided to read and walk at the same time until I found a spot to sit. As I was reading, I bumped into someone. I looked up and it turns out I bumped into a girl.
"Hey watch where you're going!" she complained. "Aw great ,"I thought, "There goes my first impression." I put the book down and held out my hand. "Need some help there...." I trailed off. She was the most beautiful girl I had ever seen. From her shining snow white hair to her silver rapier which hung by her side. "Well, you going to help me up or just stand there all day?" she asked. "Huh? Oh right," I said sheepishly. I helped her up and tried not to stare as she brushed herself off. "Well, sorry about bumping into you. I should probably go now," I said. "Hold on a second," she said. "Oh great," I thought, "Here comes the lecture." I turned around and looked at her. "Yes?" I tentatively asked. "Do I know you somewhere?" she asked. "Oh CRAP," I thought. "She recognizes me from the news reports about the 'Worst Hunt to Ever Happen' stories. I really gotta go now."
I started to slowly back away from her. "Are you sure I'm the person you think I am? Cuz uh..I have one those...um... really generic faces" I stuttered. "No I'm pretty sure I know who you are," she said. "Uh oh, here it comes," I thought, here come the hail storm of accusations and insults about what a monster I am." I then see her widen her eyes and hear her whisper, "Ryan?" I was taken aback. "I think I would have remembered a super beautiful girl like her," I thought. I started to nod. "Uh... well, yeah. That's me," I murmured. "She threw her arms around me and said, "Ryan, it's so good to see you!" I faltered a bit. "Uh.. who are you?" I tentatively asked. She grabbed my shoulders and pushed me back. "It's me Weiss you big dummy," she said, lightly punching me on the shoulder.
I suddenly had a flashback back to a summer long long ago.
We were about 9 years old, playing by the river, splashing water on each other and trying to catch the tadpoles in the sweltering summer heat. "Hey, hey Weiss!" I called. She turned and looked, "What?" she said. "Look how many I caught! See?" I showed her the bucket. She peered inside the bucket and looked up at me with those beautiful blue eyes of hers. "No fair!" she complained. "I only got four and you have six!" she complained. "I can give you one," I offered. "No I'll catch my own, thank you very much," she said. She then stuck her tongue out at me and trotted off towards the water fall.
I sat there playing with the tadpoles in my bucket until I heard a scream. "Weiss!" I thought. I got up and ran towards the waterfall as fast as I could. I saw Weiss on a boulder, an Ursa reaching for her. Seeing I only had a small blade as a weapon, I did the only sensible thing to do. I yelled, "Hey tubby, over here!" The Ursa turned towards me and growled. "I really didn't think this through did I?" I asked myself. "Ah screw it." I drew my blade my father gave to me. I ran towards it screaming at the top of my lungs. "AHHHHH!!!!" The Ursa sprinted even faster towards me. I rolled to the side and sliced off its head with one stroke, but I did not escape unscathed. Its claws raked down my back, blood gushing out. I screamed and fell on my side. "Ryan!" screamed Weiss. She ran towards me and cradled me in her lap, blood oozing around her, going into the river, dying it a scarlet red. "I got that Grimm good didn't I?" I gasped. I coughed and blood spewed out. "You got him good," Weiss said, tears welling up in her eyes. "I-I'll always p-protect you," I mumbled. Weiss started to sob, and my vision started to gray and everything went black.
"Ryan? Helloooo? Anyone home?" Weiss asked. "Huh? What? Sorry. What did you say?" I asked, jarred back to the present. "I said what were you thinking of," she said. "Oh. I was thinking about the time when we were nine years old and I slayed my first Ursa." I explained. "Oh were you now?" asked Weiss, a smirk on her face. "What?" I asked. "Oh nothing," she said. "Do you still have the scars?" she asked. "Yeah I do," I said. I lifted my shirt over my head and turned around to show her my back. "Oh my," she whispered. I already knew what she was looking at. In addition to my Ursa scars, my back is also criss-crossed with the scar of my failed hunt and the experiments that happened to me as a child. That scar ran all the way up my spine into my head. "What happened to you?" she asked. I felt her hand tracing the scars. I shivered at the touch of her cold hands. "I thinks that's enough," I said, pulling my shirt back down. "Too many painful memories there," I said. I looked at her and she turned away. "What's wrong?" I asked. "Nothing," she said, "It's just you have changed so much." I grinned. "You too Weiss. How'd you get that scar on your eye?" I asked. "I know, how about we catch up tomorrow during lunch!" she exclaimed, changing the subject. "Oh, uh... sure," I said. "Well, see you tomorrow then!" she said. I watched as she walked away, her long white hair waving behind her.
"I have changed," I whispered.
