Percy's POV

Annabeth's hands are shaking slightly in my grip. "I really appreciate the offer, I do, but if I'm away much longer my beatings will be unbearable. Maybe on the weekends I can come over? I'm really sorry," she says quietly.

I smile, "You have no reason to be sorry, the weekends sound great! But, it feels like there is another reason you don't want to stay."

Annabeth bites her lip and fiddles with her hands. "Look, a lot is going on right now and I feel awful you got dragged into it. I don't want to make things worse for you with Rachel, so, the more distance right now, the better," she says softly.

"Annabeth, you don't need to feel sorry and you certainly don't need to feel the need to protect me. I understand not staying because of the situation with your dad, but don't let Rachel be another reason . She can't weigh into your decision. You can't let her control you," I say honestly.

I watch as Annabeth shifts uncomfortably on the couch before saying, "How could I not let her control me? She has pictures of me getting beaten! You think I'm just going to ignore that, because I can't Percy! I just can't!"

Annabeth is stressed, big time. I watch her fight the tears as I open my arms for a hug. She goes into my embrace and I run my hands through her hair.

We pull apart when I hear footsteps running off. I stand up and sprint outside and I catch a glimpse of red hair turning a corner.

"Shoot!"
