Chapter 28 - Moonlit Friction

Levi's POV

Once Eren left the area, a duel between Erwin and I commenced; which resulted in total destruction of the staircase. We would've clashed for quite awhile and would've demolished the entrance if it wasn't for Hanji's interruption. Even though Erwin and I stepped away from one another, it was obvious that our anger wasn't contained.

"You guys need to stop," Hanji said, her voice solemn. "I know that Eren's delicious and all, but face the facts. There's a chance that Eren has imprinted, and if that's the case, Erwin, you've lost this round."

"That's absurd," Erwin growled. "For a shifter to imprint on a vampire?"

"I'm pretty sure you had similar intentions, so you can't be saying that to me at the moment," Hanji pointed out.

"Listen to the witch," I sneered.

"Now you take my side?"

"You guys were the ones scheming behind my back." Hanji opened her mouth to argue but quickly lowered herself in shame.

"Eh, I guess that's sorta true," she hummed. "But it's all on Erwin!" Hanji waved her hands in the air and smiled at Erwin, who stood with a foul expression.

"We're going to attempt to retrieve our hybrid," Erwin stated.

"What do you mean by our hybrid?" I raised a brow at the grumpy blonde.

"Don't start a war, Erwin!" I watched Hanji tug at Erwin's cape and whine in disagreement.

"I'm not foolish enough to let that happen. I know when to pull back," Erwin assured with confidence. "I won't back down without trying."

"Ehh..." Hanji looked over at me, probably searching for support, but I had to agree with Erwin.

It isn't going to be easy, but I am willing to head to their territory and find Eren. If this mission doesn't go well, it may the last time that I'll get to see or even hear from him. Even more so, I cannot allow Erwin to touch a single hair on Eren.

"Fine, we'll head down once it gets dark so that we can bring the others," I said, receiving a wide eyed look from Hanji.

"Good to hear. Meet out front in a couple hours," Erwin ordered with a nod.

Eren's POV

The skies transformed into a dark violet cloak that overshadowed the forest, adding on to the thick fog that had formed surrounded the town. I sat on the front porch and inhaled the crisp air, smiling at the moon that shone above my head. After a moment, I closed my eyes and allowed my body to transition into my wolf form, wanting to warm myself up before the battle.

"Eren," Mikasa called out. "We're leaving." I nodded and followed them into the forest, maintaining my position beside Mikasa.

"The foliage seem to be getting thicker the further we travel," Krista said as she shoved a low branch out of her face.

"So it seems," Annie mumbled.

"Shouldn't we travel by gear?" Reiner held up his blades and glanced at Mikasa.

"Sure, we'll find the opening much faster," Mikasa responded, adjusting her gear. "Eren, you can scout the area ahead. We'll catch up."

After acknowledging Mikasa's orders, I dashed away and followed the scent of the flowers that were located at the opening of the forest. It definitely felt easier to follow my senses.

I looked back as I arrived at the opening, listening for the sound of spraying gas, but nothing could be heard. While I made my way to the center, I observed the night sky and noted how chilly it was.

 Peaceful nights like this are always relaxing.

Suddenly, a twig from behind snapped. My ear twitched in response and my nose quickly went into action. Since Mikasa and the others were on their gear, they wouldn't be on the ground, but something about this scent was familiar.

"Eren? Is that you?" The instant that soft voice spoke up and her cloaked figure emerged, I knew that it was Petra. "It is you, isn't it?"

As she neared, I lowered my head and whimpered a bit, for the last time we met, I never got to formally apologize for that incident. Petra smiled and scanned the area before approaching my side.

"Erwin and the others are coming," she said with a glum expression. "Hanji couldn't stop them since they really want to bring you back." I let out a low growl, startling Petra. "I-I'm sorry, I just wanted to warn you before they get here... But I'm sure that you'll be able to fight with your powers," she stroked my muzzle and looked into my eyes. "You're eye is bright red, you know?"

I backed away from Petra and walked up to a stream to stare at my reflection. She was right; my left eye emitted a crimson glow that mocked my existence.

"Eren!" My head darted into the direction that Mikasa's voice echoed from. "There's one behind you!"

Mikasa and her squad were rapidly getting closer to the opening with their 3DMG. I recognized that hostile expression of hers and realized that she was referring to Petra, who was now blending into the shadows.

"I'll have to retreat for now," Petra whispered.

"Don't let her get away!" Mikasa ordered Reiner and Krista after her as she made her way by my side. "You need to be careful, Eren. It's nightfall."

I rolled my eyes and huffed at her words. She frowned in response, as if she understood my gestures.

"There are a few closing in," Annie hollered from a few feet away. "Prepare yourselves!"

Mikasa and I nodded in agreement, separating ourselves into position. By now, I could hear their footsteps rushing towards us and the sound of the bushes rustling by their movements. A few seconds later, three shadowy figures darted from the forest and into the opening. The moonlight acted as their spotlight, revealing their identities.

In front of Annie, Hanji stood with a cheerful smile, twirling a wand around her fingers while Levi stood against Mikasa, his face as disinterested as ever. Unfortunately, Erwin posed before me, a dangerous smirk plastered across his face.

"What a coincidence, Eren. We meet again," he smiled innocently. I let out a snarl as Erwin threw his cloak off to the side and cracked his knuckles. "Shall we dance?"
