Chapter 20 - Prepare for the Night

Eren's POV

"Hey Levi, how come you don't have to wear a long robe out here in the greenhouse? I see that Petra has to wear it due to all this sunlight." I asked while Hanji gathered our empty teacups and handed them over to Petra. Levi cleared his throat before looking up at me.

"I'm a Daywalker, I can stand being in the sun for some time.. Petra isn't."

"Ah. So.. who else here is a Daywalker?" I asked out of curiosity. Levi glanced at me and then at Hanji before he answered.

"Erwin. But he doesn't really like talk about it. Something about being an outcast or a loner, as he is."

"We all know that you're the loner around here, Levi." Hanji stated as we all followed her out the greenhouse. Petra giggled and held her hand to her mouth when she saw Levi staring at her. The two of them exchanged glances before finally averting their gazes away from each other. I studied their faces and saw sadness on Petra's face but nothing on Levi. Just what kind of relationship do those two have..?

We eventually reached the castle after a walk around the rose garden and went straight to the kitchen to thoroughly wash the teacups clean, set them in their designated areas, and polish the rest of the utensils. It kind of became a habit after living here for almost a week now. Levi would always pester me about cleanliness, how I had to change my bed sheets almost twice a week, dust off the rooms daily, wash dishes every morning, sweep the floor in the afternoon, and scrub the bathrooms. Honestly, instead of being held here captive, I think I was hired to be their personal butler or something.

I would even serve them daily snacks or help with their "work" at times. All I'd do with Levi was serve him tea or clean. Petra didn't have any jobs as a royal princess so we spent most of our time chatting or she'd teach me new things like sewing and such. Hanji would always need help in her lab and occasionally ask for blood samples for me. She wasn't a vampire so why would she..? Nah, I'm just not gonna get into that. Hanji is Hanji.

I've also learned a few things, like how to bake cookies from Petra, how to organize documents from Levi, and how to successfully sneak around the castle from Hanji. Of course, I missed my daily life at the motel with my family but being here with Levi wasn't so bad.. With Levi..

I froze as I was walking down the hall, noticing Levi leaning against the wall with his arms wrapped around himself. His breathing was rapid, as if he had a hard time breathing, I could see that his face was worn out and even paler than usual. Was it even possible for Levi to get even paler?

"Levi? Are you alright?" I slowly inched closer to him and saw sweat dripping down his forehead. Levi gasped for air and bit on his lips with his sharp fangs, making them bleed. "Hey, Levi what are you-"

"Stay back!" He spat at me. I abruptly took a step back and saw that his eyes were flickering into their deep red color. In response, my fists clenched and the golden glint of my eyes glowed, my senses never failed me when there was a threat around me. Was Levi having one of those random vampire frenzies? If so, then I'd have to take him down.

"If that's what you're going through then.." I muttered and narrowed my eyes at Levi's sudden staggering step forward. His legs were wobbly, I thought he was gonna collapse here and now. The sight of his red eyes made something inside of me ignite. Everytime I see those eyes memories from back then would always come back to me. I had almost forgotten I was I living in a castle full of vampires.

"T-this is nothing. Move out of the way." He brushed his shoulder past me and limped down the dark hall. I released my fists and sighed. If Levi was already having a frenzy, then the Eclipse must be close. During the Eclipse, vampires lose control over their bodies and go on a rampage in the middle of the night, searching for the blood that they crave.
