Chapter 29 - Change In Plans

Levi's POV

I clicked my tongue in frustration as I watched Erwin talk to Eren. He liked to put up that act of being all innocent and friendly. The urge to rush over to his side kept on bothering me, but I had to deal with the monstrous force that stood before me. She held up her blades and targeted my face with those empty eyes of hers. Without a doubt, I recognized her immediately.

"You're the infamous Red Blade, aren't you?" She poised herself and pointed her blade at my throat.

"And if I am?" The way she looked at me reeked of hostility and hatred. My body stiffened; not because I felt threatened, but instead, excited.

"So, that means my information is correct," I hummed. "You've slaughtered many of our familiars, you know?"

"It is my duty," she declared, angling her blades. "Which is why I won't allow any of you to take Eren away from me!"

"I guess your possessive personality means that you're Mikasa?"

"Eren has mentioned my name?" She slowly inched towards me with caution.

"Nice to meet you. I'm his lover," I smirked, using my title to my advantage. "It seems that you're another rival, but no matter."

"You bastard!" Mikasa lunged at me with her twin blades in anger and used her gear to chase after me as I dashed into the forest in order to minimize her line of sight.

With ease, I dodged her attack and hopped from one branch to another, looking down at Hanji's battle below. Hanji had to deal with an intimidating looking blonde, which appeared to be her opposite, to be honest. She was serious and positioned for a fist fight, despite being equipped with gear. Although she seemed to be a tough opponent, she didn't have a chance against Hanji. Whenever Hanji wields her wand in battle, anything can happen.

"Get back here, you midget!" I glanced over my shoulder and saw that Mikasa had already caught up with me. "Take that!" She slashed her blade, marking my cheek and causing my body to fall off balance.

"Not bad," I spat as I landed on the ground.

"I will battle you for Eren!" She grit her teeth and rebounded herself off a tree.

"Interesting," I said as I ripped off my heavy cloak. "I'll take you on!"

Within a split second, I lengthened my nails and bolted into her direction with a mischievous smile formed on my face. Mikasa's blades clashed with my claws several times, resulting in a battle of endurance. It'd been decades since a human last scarred my face - she was definitely a worthy opponent.

We took a step back from on another and used the moment to catch our breaths. At the same time, Mikasa replaced her damaged blades with sharper ones and prepared herself for a second round. I did the same by cracking my knuckles, but froze once I felt a murderous aura nearby.

"Eren!" Mikasa lowered her blades, a fearful expression displayed on her face. Looking over my shoulder, Eren was pinning Erwin to the ground, his eyes a vicious combination of red and gold.

"You never fail to disappoint me," Erwin said, gritting his teeth as he kept his grip around Eren's neck. "I see you've become completely rabid." Eren snarled and snapped his jaw at Erwin's throat, missing by merely centimeters. "I could probably end you right here and now..."

"I'll kill you," I assured as solemnly as I possibly could, ready to slit his throat at any second.

"I jest! Eren's too precious to me." Erwin lifted Eren by his throat and swung his heavy body at a tree. Eren stumbled trying to get back on his feet and winced in pain, falling back down repeatedly.

"His transformation shouldn't be at this stage," Mikasa murmured. "His head's probably messed up..."

"Ah, that's probably because he's in the middle of a transition from being a normal vampire to a Daywalker," Erwin stated as a matter of fact. "He'll be able roam freely!"

"What did you say?!" Mikasa tightened her grip on her blades and stomped forward.

"I happened to find the potions that Mr. Ral created back when he was alive," Erwin explained. "With this, he'll be a Daywalker that's able to transform into a wolf. Amazing, isn't it?"

"He's not some lab rat!" As Mikasa launched herself at Erwin, I dashed ahead of her and grabbed Erwin by his throat. "You could've poisoned him," Mikasa shouted from behind me. 

"Give me one reason why I shouldn't kill you right now." I tightened my grip, causing my claws to dig into his flesh.

"Now, now, Levi. With the potion, he'll adapt quickly and have a chance to coexist!" Erwin chortled as he went on. "He'll become a powerful hybrid once he gets used to it... I've gotten my chance to experiment without ending his life, and you people get the chance of living peacefully."

"So, you're saying that Eren won't be in pain anymore?" Mikasa stood by my side and held her blade up at Erwin. "He won't struggle between his identities?"

"Exactly. He'll merge into both and become a true hybrid." I narrowed my eyes at Erwin and scanned his face, searching for any hints of a bluff. "You can see for yourself."

Erwin directed our attention to Eren's body, which was reverting into his human form. I transported to his side and lifted his head on my lap, listening for a heartbeat. With the soft pumping of his heart resonating in my ear, I let out a long sigh, nodding over at Erwin and Mikasa in the distance.

"If you ask me, it's a double win," Erwin said as Mikasa sheathed her blades. 

"I thought that your intention was to take him away?"

"It was," Erwin huffed. "But Hanji and I came up with this miraculous idea on the way down here. It's much more progressive than taking him in as my slave."

"I could still kill you," Mikasa hissed, sending glares over at Erwin.

"Anytime," Erwin chuckled. "But I think we'll be preoccupied for awhile. After all, results will also depend on how Eren takes it."

Listening in to the conversation at their side, it seemed like peace was maintained, at least for the moment. The tensions weren't going to disappear that easily, but it felt as if everything was settled. Eren would have a chance of living without being chained to his true form.

"When are you going to wake up, you damned brat?" I brushed his brown locks off of his dirty face and continued to listen to the faint beating of his heart. "Let me see those bright eyes of yours..."
