Calum's POV:
Everything came down to this moment right now. This man standing only meters away from me has the power to decide my entire future. I had seen him when I was scanning around all of the faces whilst performing but his casual clothing made me think that it wasn't him from the record label. The man was only dressed in some dark blue jeans and a white baggy top. His hair was dark and greying slightly at the top and he had dark and large eyes. Facially he was quite peculiar looking.
On the right of the man was another much younger boy that must be around my age. He had bright blue hair and was wearing an American themed top and skinny black jeans. He looked almost as awkward as I felt as he kept his gaze on the floor. The man from the company began clapping which suddenly made the boy jolt and look up as a reaction to the sound. "I have to say, that was pretty good." He was looking directly at me and a weight was suddenly taken from off of my chest. If he thought that I did well then I actually stand a chance.
He reached across and stuck his hand out for me to shake. "I'm Mark Smith and I'm from Capitol records." He finally introduced himself. I took two steps forward and shook the mans hand. "Calum." I replied. "Calum Hood."
Mark then turned to face the boy on his right and repeated the same process of introducing himself. The boy tore his gaze away from the floor and shook the mans hand. "Michael Clifford."
Then Mark looked past me at Luke and stuck his hand out for him to shake, deciding he didn't need to introduce himself this time. Luke had to take a few steps forward like I did before he could reach the mans hand. "Luke Hemmings."
I had the feeling that Michael and Luke knew each other. Luke kept an eye on the quieter lad, making sure to answer any questions that he couldn't answer on his behalf. From Marks set up, it seemed like all three of us had the chance of being signed. This is an awful situation to be in because there is no way that I would be able to complete with Luke's singing ability.
Luke does this thing were he uploads videos of himself singing on to his YouTube channel. He is usually joined with another boy who has a darker and more dirtier blonde coloured hair. They were very good and already have quite a few subscribers. Once, Luke had asked me to fill in for his friend but Sally didn't allow me. Come to think of it, Luke's friend from YouTube must be the now bright blue haired boy in front of me now.
"Calum, you are such a good performer, amazing stage presence." Mark looked at me directly in the eyes. If this man wasn't complimenting me then he would be slightly intimidating. "Luke, your voice is amazing for someone of your age, I've been watching you for quite some time now." He tore his gaze from me and looked at the boy just behind my right shoulder. "Michael, your singing is amazing and you have the likeable factor, that will get you far." Michael looked up from the ground with a smile on his face.
"Thank you, it really means a lot." All three of us looked ecstatic with his kind words as his opinion really meant everything to us. Well, i knew that it meant a lot to me and i hope that they feel the same as i did. This is the dream opportunity for any aspiring musician and it literally means the world for him to tell me that i have amazing stage presence. Even if he turned round to me now and told me that he wasn't offering me the deal, having his professional opinion on my singing is still pretty awesome.
Mark picked up a blazer from on one of the sofas and began rummaging through one of the pockets until he pulled out a couple of pieces of paper. "I would like to sign all three of you." fuck, fuck, its happening. My heart was racing and pounding against my chest with sheer excitement and adrenalin. Its happened. It is actually happening. He separated the papers and handed one to Michael, then Luke and finally me.
My eyes raced over each of the words, taking in every single one. I had to take a deep breath at multiple points just to try and keep my cool in front of Mark. This is amazing. Then i read over some certain words. This made no sense, none at all.
The band will have a week before they are required to move to London to pursue their career.
There was so much that confused me about this sentence. Number one, band. Is that why Michael and Luke are here too? I'm not going to be a solo artist, i'm being put in to a band. Number two, London. That is an hour and a half drive from Swindon. I can't leave Darcy. It is the only thing that i will not do. I felt my heart shatter in to pieces all in front of me, leaving shards of my dreams everywhere.
"Whats this about a band and London?" Luke was the first to question. The boy who was originally behind me had moved so that he could stand beside Michael who shared the same expression as me. Luke didn't look as pale and awkward as Michael and I did, he just looked confused. To be fair, Michael has looked the same since the beginning so its only really me that looks broken by all of this. To have your dream shattered by your morals is a weird concept to try and get your head around.
Mark began putting on his blazer that he had just pulled out these three letters from. "Well, you're around the same age, sing," He listed as if we should have seen this coming, as if it were obvious. "The capitol building is in London, if you want the deal then you're going to have to move there."
This was all happening too fast for my mind to actually catch. Deal. London. Band. Darcy. I've only just left that orphanage like twelve hours ago. It's all too rushed. This is all that i've ever wanted but i don't feel prepared to leave Darcy here on her own for it. "I have a sister." I stated.
Mark stopped in his place. "And i have a dog Calum." He mocked me.
I folded up the letter in my hands. "I can't leave her, we have no one, she'll have no one." I'm now congratulating myself for not telling Darcy at the beginning. There is no doubt in my mind that she would make me go and allow herself to be left here, she is that kind of person. I wanted this so bad, surely they would just allow her to come.
"Calum, no." He simply shot back.
Well then i'm not going, its simple. I want to tell him. Darcy and I come as a package, have done since birth. "She writes music." Luke interjected suddenly. Shock filled my entire body. Why the hell didn't i think of that? She should be able to come because she is worth it. She can actually have a purpose to the band, it's not some kind of free ride for her.
Again, Mark paused. He seemed like he was thinking it over himself, weighing up the pros and cons. "She wrote my last song today, Social Casualty." I added to try and persuade him more. Mark opened up his hand and waited expectantly.
"The letter, pass it." This is it. He has the power to make and break my dreams and he literally broke them after allowing them. By giving over this letter I'm giving up the chance of this signing. 'For Darcy' repeated over and over in my head as i passed over the letter. Luke and Michael's heads looked down to the floor, unable to meet my gaze in the awkward situation.
I turned to leave the room, flashing a weak smile to Steve who had been stood in the doorway the entire meeting. "Calum, turn around mate."
Mark handed me back the letter. "I can't go without Darcy." I repeated. Mark nodded towards the letter that was clenched in my hands.
The first line, which originally said To Mr Hood. Had been altered to have a + Sister written in pen on the end. Darcy had been invited too.
