Perrie looks at me with a kind and understanding expression. Zayn comes over and he and Perrie have a whispered conversation. Finally, Zayn nods his head.
They seem to like me even though I seem unable to speak a word. Perrie turns to me. "How would you feel about being adopted by us?" she asks. I stop breathing.
"That would be so cool!" I break my silence excitedly. "But-" I hesitate. "But, I would never, ever leave my best friend behind. She's like a sister to me. Do you think you could adopt her too?" I ask this hopefully, but my hopes are dashed when Zayn replies. "I'm sorry honey. It would have to be just you."
Perrie looks at me in despair. "I'm sorry too then," I say. "My best friend has been my family for the past 13 years. I'm not deserting her now." I turn and run up the stairs, only to collapse onto my bed, tears running fast down my hot cheeks. That's it.
I just ruined my chance at life.
