"I got a job!" I squeal, running through the door and to Lachlan's office.
"Really?" Lachlan asks, turning to me with his brow raised. I notice that he was editing a video.
"Yep." I beam, smiling brightly. "Im going to be a paramedic!"
"When did this happen?" He asks.
"A few hours ago. I didn't want to tell you what I was doing until it actually happened."
"Wow, Cait. I'm really proud of you." He responds, genuinely smiling at me.
"Thanks!" I smile, giving him a quick hug. I notice that as I do so, my heart starts beating quickly again. I shake my feelings away and ask, "Whatcha doin?"
Lachlan smiles, turning back to his computer screens as I stand next to him. "I was editing a new Pokemon Go episode I did with Billy."
"That sounds fun." I reply.
"Yeah, good catches." He responds.
After a moments' silence, I excuse myself and walk to my bedroom across the hallway. I go on my laptop and decide to look at the apartment again.
"I'm gonna have to work really hard for this..." I mutter to myself.
~
"Yo. You ready for your first day?" An all too familiar voice asks, and my eyes widen.
"Jacob? You're my partner?" I ask, shocked.
"Yep." He smiles. "And also Allie over there, who'll be showing you the ropes today. But I'm pretty sure you've got that down." He winks, causing me to smile and let out a giggle.
I look over at Allie; she's absolutely stunning with long blonde hair and chocolate brown eyes; she's pretty tall and her smile could warm any unsuspecting mans' heart. She waves, walking over to us.
"So you're the famous Caitlin." She states, smiling.
"Famous? I don't know about that." I respond, smiling too.
"Oh, please. Jake couldn't stop-" she is suddenly interrupted me a glare from Jacob, causing me to laugh.
"So, what are we gonna be doing today?" I ask, and the pair look at each other, then smile at me.
"Nothing."
~
They were kidding. I actually had to sit down and do paperwork, along with studying for an hour or two.
That is, until Jacob's walkie talkie goes off. He looks at us, and my body immediately responds, hurriedly following the two into the ambulance.
"What's the call?" I ask as Jacob hurriedly pulls out of the hospital and barrels down the street.
"Unconscious man; not responding. They said that he collapsed on the ground, clutching his heart." Jacob responds.
"Alright." I reply, a little nervous.
"Maybe you should watch us this time." Allie says, noticing my slight discomfort. "It was hard for me the first time I went on call."
"I-I can do this." I reply, remaining determined.
"Whatever you say." Allie smiles from the front, and we stop, rushing out of the car. I grab the AED from the back and rush to Allie and Jacob, who have kneeled by the man.
"Are you okay? Are you okay?" Allie asks, tapping his shoulders.
No response.
Allie starts CPR as Jacob watches over her, putting an air mask over the man's face. I shakily look at the device in my hands and kneel down next to Jacob, setting up the AED and removing the man's shirt. I put the two pads on; one on his upper left side while the other is on his lower right side.
"28, 29, 30." Allie says, motioning for Jacob to give two breaths. He blows through the tube and I realize that this is my cue.
"Step away, analyzing." I seriously say, and my fellow mates stop their motions.
"Analyzing..." The machine says. It beeps for a couple seconds and then stops. "Continue CPR."
This time, Jacob takes over while Allie does the breaths. It takes a couple more sets until the machine says "shock advised." I shock him, his body jolting, and Allie starts CPR.
"We should get ready to put him in a stretcher." Jacob says.
"I got it. Take over for me." I say, and he nods. I walk back to the car and pull out the stretcher and mask.
"He's got a faint pulse!" Allie calls to me, and for some reason I mentally sigh in relief. I return back to the task at hand and wheel the gurney towards them.
"On the count of three." Jacob says, and Allie and I nod. "One... Two... Three!" He says, and we hoist the man onto the stretcher. Jacob and I wheel him into the back of the ambulance as Allie asks if anyone knows him personally and would like to come along.
An old woman waves her hand, and I help her into the back of the ambulance. "Caitlin, you stay back there and make sure everything's alright, okay?" Allie says.
"Alright!" I call back.
~
"Whew. What a tiring day." I sigh, falling into one of the chairs near the front desk.
"This was nothing." Jacob says, causing me to slightly groan.
"I'm just happy that we managed to save that man." I reply, remembering today's earlier events.
"Yeah; it's a great feeling, isn't it?" Allie agrees.
"It really is." I respond. I check the time and my eyes suddenly widen. "Wow. I've got to go; it's really late."
"Wow." Jacob agrees. "Well, I'll catch you guys tomorrow."
"See ya!" We both wave, and I say goodbye to Allie shortly after.
I pull up to the Powers' house and plop onto my bed, exhausted. I worked the whole day and ended up going on three calls; one was with the man and the other two were busts.
Seriously.... Kids these days.
"So... How was work?" Lachlan's heavenly voice rings.
"Tiring." I groan, stuffing my face into a pillow.
"It had to be. You haven't even changed yet." He points out.
"I knoowwww..."
"It was boring here today." Lachlan says, a weight sitting on my bed.
"Really? Why?" I ask, lifting my head from the pillow to look at him.
"Cause you weren't here." He says, a light tint of pink on his cheeks. Wait, what? I'm just imagining things again, aren't I?
I lightly blush, but smile. "You're so sweet."
"But not as sweet as your crêpes!" Lachlan says, causing me to roll my eyes.
"I'm not making you crêpes this late at night, Lachlan."
"Please?"
"No."
"Please?"
"No."
"Please?"
"No."
"Can I have a hug?"
"No."
"Really?"
"No." I giggle, jumping on top of him and hugging him tightly, catching him off guard. He slowly wraps his arms around me, chuckling.
"I missed you, Caitlin."
