CH 14 - Christmas at the Brindley Household

The school Christmas holidays had ended last Friday, though then there was still the stream on Tuesday: the night before we had to pack and leave for Essex.

"I hate packing," I mumbled, zipping my suitcase closed after packing at five in the bloody morning.

Then Mum seemed to walk pass my room and retorted, "Well you shouldn't have been up late with your friends after your stream slot."

Groaning, I threw myself onto my bed, feeling the soft pillows contact my worn out face. I closed my eyes for a few seconds before I heard a sudden knock on the door. I mumbled and turned to my side to spot Dad leaning against the door frame.

"Come on," Dad tried to encourage me whilst I flopped around like a fish. "I have to drive all the way there today, and we are not going to be late."

I asked then, "Who's going to be there...apart from Grandad and Grandma of course."

He whistled in thought before listing out several names. All of them were clueless to me until he told me their relations to him. After he did, I said that I was going to change. Dad walked off to do something Mum had told him to do, so I was left on my own trying to put a warm jumper on as well as some jeans.

Apparently snow was supposed to common here in the UK. But Dad had told me that they hadn't had snow for a couple of years now. It a slight shame for me and Ellie: we both wanted to see some snow for once. The reason for me was because I never experienced snow, and the reason for Ellie is due to fact that she was never allowed to go outside and play whilst being stuck in the hell hole of an orphanage.

Grabbing another coat, I pulled my suitcase and placed it by the front door, returning to my room to grab my rucksack as well as my phone. There were a stack of presents all wrapped and put into a bag by my bed. Picking it up, I subtly hid it behind my suitcase, walking away to find something else to do.

Mum seemed to be getting the place tidy and ready for the next few days when we were out. We were returning from Essex the day before New Years for the Office Party we were attending.

"Go put the dishes away," Mum instructed as she washed them.

After another half an hour of getting the place tidy, we all headed down stairs. Ellie looked as if she brought all of her art equipment with her as she brought her large sketchbook down the flat as well as her little bag of paints. She loved art quite a lot, so I was definitely correct when I had bought her presents.

The drive was cold and boring. I slept most of it, but once I spotted the large cosy house that we slowly park in front of, I felt my legs ache after I stretched them outwards. Luckily Ellie didn't have to worry since she was much shorter and had plenty of leg room.

The Brindley house was large but rather an Old English sort. It was adorned with many vines and bushes of wilting flowers as well as early blooms. Smoke rose from the chimney as I stood beside my sister of the cobbled pathway.

"Lewis, finally you made it!" We found Grandma with smiles on her face when she walked out of the door. She still had an apron on as well as a oven mitt over her shoulder. "We've been waiting for an hour now."

Dad simply replied after a hug. "There was a lot of traffic and these two had a long night."

At that moment, Grandma seemed to look at us before giving us a hug each. "Wonderful to see you two again! Ellie, you look lovely with the coat I sent you last month."

"Thank you," Ellie sheepishly rubbed the back of neck, making me giggle slightly. Though then I got the comeback when Grandma asked me a question I wished had been more private.
