U walk slowly and nervously into the doctors room, clutching Thomas' hand just as fiercely as he grips yours. The doctor is grim faced as he offers u a seat and pulls out his own chair behind an oak desk.
"Right," he says, slicking his hair back on his head in a greasy wave, "Thomas, the surgery u are going to have will be risky, as we have to remove the blood clot that is trapped in ur leg, of course if this was left untreated, u could lose feeling in the leg or even have heart failure, but even during this surgery, things can go wrong. For example, we could slice through the vein itself and cut off circulation to the foot. What I'm saying is, u could potentially lose your leg if the clot is hard to isolate."
Thomas nodded as he gulped deeply and looked at u for some support.
"Ok.... Thank u doctor. Could anything else go wrong?" Ur voice came out as strong as u could make it.
"There are a few other risks, yes. You could also suffer from heavy blood loss as we will be opening the vein whilst blood is still circulating to the lower leg. We will of course tourniquet the upper thigh to prevent most of the blood flow, but it is still a bit of a risk with such a complicated surgery."
Ur heart sank as u sat in that little green chair- the doctor seemed to be digging Thomas further and further into the grave, not helping him out of it. Meanwhile Thomas' face had drained of all colour and he clasped the arms of the chair as if he was about to fall off.

The doctor then turned to u, "Miss (ur last name?), would u mind leaving the room whilst I send the patient in for some pre op scans?"
"Can't I go in with him?"
"I'm afraid not- strictly against hospital rules. We shan't be more than an hour"

U nodded sadly and stood up to go. Thomas was still frozen in his chair, and it broke ur heart to leave him in such a condition. U opened the door and hurried out so you didn't have to see him in such a state.

U collapsed on one of the waiting room chairs and silently sobbed as u stared at the other miserable patients awaiting their news. One man in particular looked over at u in a wheelchair, he must've been around 80. Finally he called over to u, "Excuse me, miss? Are u quite alright? I don't suppose you'd want some company would u?"
You didn't know this man, neither did u know why he was being so kind to you. Nevertheless, u stood up and walked over to the chair next to him.
"I'm Jacob. Jacob Jankowski."
"I'm y/n. Thank you for this."
U started to say something mundane about the weather, but before u could, u erupted in a flood of tears as it hit u- Thomas might not make it.

Mr Jankowski leant over and scooped u into his arms as u cried, whispering reassurances and patting ur shoulder gently. His kindness made u cry even more. When it was over, u just sat there together as u told him everything. Somehow the presence of a perfect stranger like Mr Jankowski made it all seem a bit more bearable for you to talk about Thomas.
