"There's no way for us to convince him to spare his life without taking some risks."
I cross my arms and throw one leg over the other while Erwin paces the room. Tomorrow morning is Eren's trial. He either joins us to reclaim Wall Maria or he is given to the Military Police to be killed. I expected nothing but a plan to come from Erwin. He always has something up his sleeve and swirling around in his sadistic head. "As you know, we lack evidence of the ability to keep him in check," I remind him. "Without that kind of proof, we're at a loss."
"Unless..." He stops walking to face me. "You and Levi prove to the court that he will obey no matter how you treat him. The thought of rebellion won't cross his mind as long as he's under the control of humanity's strongest soldiers."
"Is that right?"
He walks over to me and leans down, bracing his arm on the arm of the sofa. His face is close enough for me to feel his hot breath against my upper lip. I would usually push someone away once they became this close but I know for a fact Erwin won't do anything I would find an issue with. He knows better. "Since he's under control, that shouldn't be too hard, right? Convince Zackly to give him to us and everything else will come later."
"Erwin..." I put one leg around his waist and a fist to his chest, smirking. "You're as tacky as ever."
Commander-in-Cheif Darius Zackly. Zackly is a strict military leader who is only concerned with the best interests of humanity. As the head of the entire military, his priorities are to lie within what is best for all of the humanity. Zackly has no time for drama, nor does he tolerate it, and is solely focused on carrying out his judgments.
He remains ever serious but at the same time tired as his age begins to catch up to him. The old man should retire before he dies of a stroke. Sadly, there really isn't anyone like him to claim his position once he's gone so the military needs him to the very last second he can continue on.
Zackly is among the people capable of abandoning their humanity to outdo the Titans as well as having the guts to also abandon things important to them in order to change something in the world. Sometimes, when I look into his eyes, something tells me he has a much darker side and would drop all of the humanity in a heartbeat if it meant saving his own ass. His eyes show a hidden, demented, psychopathic side. Now, this man is the judge of Eren's life.
I stand in the court in between Levi and Erwin. Eren is kneeling before Darius with his hands chained behind his back. He looks nervous. I don't blame him. The disgust people looked at him with was beyond tolerable. I can't say anything. I have to keep reminding myself that I still have a title to live up to.
Darius sits over him with every single report of the Battle of Trost and the victorious sealing of Wall Rose. I had to submit a report of my own and I had to be nothing but honest. I have no defense for Eren. I don't believe his ability is stable but he still deserves a chance. Zackly has the typical appearance of an old man. His eyes are sunken and very tired looking, he wears glasses, he has noticeable wrinkles on his face, and his hair gray hair is receded. He also has a full gray scruffy beard and mustache.
In addition, he is rather short which gives him a presence uncommon for a man of his rank. Zackly's casual attire consists of a plain white shirt with normal dark colored pants. In a more formal setting, he adds a bolo tie, much like the three commanders under him. Over this, he wears a brown trench coat that has a black shield emblem with a white border and cross. "You are Eren Yeager, right?" Darius asks. "You're a soldier who vowed to devote his life to the King." The King can bite me. "Is that correct?"
"Yes, sir," Eren respectively replies.
"This is an exceptional case. It is outside the bounds of the common law, therefore we must convene a special court-martial. The final decision will be handed down by me. We will deliberate upon whether you live or die as well. Do you have any objections?"
