Fancy Occasion

Nobles, business owners, even some royals. This place is not fit for someone like me. I pace around the room, taking occasional glances back to Erwin. I lost track of Levi not too long ago. Only because all the females in the room are surrounding him like wild dogs do a meal. The males tried the same for me but one flash of a blade in my vest solved my problem fast.

After the questions begin to pile on me, I step outside to have a quick smoke. I'm not the only one. There's Nile standing outside but not smoking, just standing alone. I light a cigarette and stick it between my lips. We haven't spoken since the trial. He put Eren on the spot and made it very clear that he wanted to kill him. He knew I would want to protect him. "As commander, shouldn't you be in there socializing?"

"This isn't my cup of tea. I would rather be home with my wife and kids. What about you? Since when were you and Levi into occasions like this?"

"We're not, nor will we ever be. We're here as escorts for Erwin, just in case he gets too rowdy."

He looks me over then sighs. "I'm guessing you're still upset with what happened in court."

"No, I'm just disappointed."

"I was only doing my job. I-"

"Don't give me that crap. You were acting upon impulse and spite. Nothing else. What if Zachary did go in your favor? After you dissected him, what would come next? You go out and investigate it? No, you would come to my Elite Squad for help. You've never seen a Titan because all you've ever done is hide behind a title and the walls." I drop my cigarette and crush it under my foot. I brush past him before entering again. "And no kid, a soldier, deserves to be subjected to such coward behavior from a commander."

When I walk back inside, I see that the dancing part of the evening has begun. I guess it should be easier to find Levi now. He hates dancing. Only because he's never found anyone of the right height to do it with. I eventually come across him leaning against a wall, as far away from the party as possible. He looks so bored. Not surprised at all. I stand next to him. "Where's Erwin?"

"He went into an office with Zackly. I'm guessing they're going to further talk about his plan with Eren."

I glance at the clock and it reads midnight on the dot. We've been at this wretched occasion for over three hours. I feel Levi's warm hand slip into mine and he raises it up to kiss the back. "It's officially December 25th. Happy birthday."

I forgot our birthday was coming up and we had the same birthday. I scoff and lean into his shoulder, taking in his sweet scent. He didn't have to fight today or go outside the walls. He smells exactly like he always should. Like Levi. "Happy birthday, Levi."

He wraps both arms around behind me and pulls me close. The way he embraces. He still misses them, Furlan and Isabel. He doesn't want to lose me too. He moves from the wall and begins pulling me toward the middle of the dance floor. "Levi... What are you doing? People are staring."

He turns around and keeps both of his arms wrapped around my waist while I naturally bring mine around his neck. Soft, slow music continues to play. As I dance with him, I enjoy the moment and the music. The great thing about music is that it doesn't save your life. It gives you strength and willpower to save your own life. That's the very beauty of music. "Saichi," he whispers into my ear. "I love you."

I jump at the sudden words and bury my face into his neck. "Don't say such embarrassing words at a time like this." I love you, too, Levi. Of course, I can't say that aloud. I'm such a coward and hypocrite. "I'm so happy, Levi."
