"Advance! We will now begin the 57th expedition beyond the walls! Onward!"
I snap the reins of my horse and begin moving with the rest of the Survey Corps. I am placed behind Erwin with Mike to my left. I wanted to be near the Elite but that comes later in the formation. Erwin made it very clear to me that my speed will allow me to take down any Titan that might jeopardize the formation of the Elite Squad and still come back in perfect placement. The moment we pass under the wall, I feel my stomach curl. We are going into old territory where the Titans have yet to be defeated. I'm so focused on keeping my head straight, I almost didn't hear Hange yell, "Ten meter Titan to the left!"
I look up to see a gigantic Titan storming slowly toward us. Not huge in just height but size. That fat bastard pisses me off just by being in existence. I curse under my breath and grab my triggers. At the same time, the support squad moves in. I zip up behind them and let them go at the first cut. As I expected, the first go isn't deep enough. He's so close to the formation he can screw this entire thing up. One of the two shouts down, "Protect the ranks!"
I huff and grab two maneuvering blades. I hate my job. I take one step off a ledge and take full speed ahead. Eren yells to me, "Captain be careful!"
I surprisingly hear Levi reply, "Oi! Eren, keep your eyes straight ahead. She'll be fine. She is just blowing off some steam. At the same time, she's keeping your ass safe."
I quickly cut at both ankles and work my way up the leg cutting at the chubby limbs as I go. When I reach its neck, I stand on its head for a few seconds before stabbing it right in the weak spot and pushing the blades in as far as they go. Even as the Titan screams and shakes, I go farther, steaming covering my field of vision. I flip my body over and cut at a precise acute angle.
As soon as the cut is done and the Titan begins to fall dead, I rush back to the formation and land on top of my horse Mike was holding on to. I drop the bloody blades and put away my triggers. I grab the reins again and go forth. My hands are warm with the blood but I ignore it. As soon as we are officially outside the walls and in the wide open, I see Erwin hold out his left hand. "Deploy long-range enemy scouting formation!"
As the formation splits and everyone goes to the designated place, I snap the reins again. I continue forward so that I catch up with the Elite squad and continue ahead of them, moving next to Levi. My job is to get them to the woods. The Titan killing and orders are left to me or Levi. As we're going forward, I can't help but hear flares going off already. Are you serious? Now? It's not us for the time being so it's not our turn to be concerned. Yet.
We're moving smoothly for a good couple of minutes before I hear Levi say, "Green flares." I look up to see three green flares that have gone off. That's coming from the group of Armin and others from his training group. Did they have to fight so soon? Damn it. "Oluo! Fire!"
"On it, Captain!"
Oluo sends off a responding green flare. I take only one look to my right to meet eyes with Levi then face forward again. The look in his eyes tells me we're thinking the same thing. Suddenly, I hear someone yell, "I have a report!" To the right, a soldier approaches urgently. "A verbal report! The search squad on the right flank suffered a devastating blow! They've lost the capability to scout the enemy! Please relay this message to the right flank!"
As he moves off, I tighten my grip on my reins. "Petra! Go!" This is pissing me off. When she breaks away, Levi moves back to fill her place and I move back to fill his. I refuse for this cover to be open for Eren. He will be surrounded until I feel otherwise. I hear more flares go off. This time, three black. Black? A variant? Eren expresses this aloud. I want to throw myself to the ground and give up but that isn't who I was trained to be. "Eren, responding flare immediately!"
