Levi's POV
Years pass. Even after Erwin's death, Saichi runs the division as he trusted her to. It wasn't until we won. After seven more years of fighting....we won. Humanity won. Everyone lifted their blades, screaming and cheering. Those began to cry and others just rubbed their aching bones, happy that it was finally over. For me, I was relieved as well. I was getting old and I didn't know how many more years I had left before I had to retire.
I searched the crowd for Saichi and Eren, the main two in this fight. I began asking around and no one knew. It was then that everyone began to realize that the two had never gotten up. Eren lied near his fading away Titan corpse while Saichi is not too far from him. Their bodies were covered in wounds and their clothes were drenched in blood. I ran to her side and tried to sit her body up. She was barely breathing and she couldn't move a muscle.
Hange looked at the scene and began yelling orders. "Prepare for departure! I need the carriages that will carry these two to be held at high priority! We will go to the wall at full speed, no breaks! They need medical attention immediately!"
Everyone understood the urgency and wasted no time. We did our best to patch them up enough to keep breathing until we could get them the best medical care the inner wall has to offer. Once we went through the wall, there was no slowly walk inside. I led the carriages on the horse at full speed through each wall, to Mitras. Everyone paved a way, thankfully. Only a few were knocked over as I and the carriages pushed through.
Once we reached the hospital, Armin and Hange put themselves at the head of the staff to help save the lives of the two beings that fought the worst and returned humanity their freedom. I and other soldiers paced outside for almost two hours.
Hange finally comes out to retrieve me and Nile. When we get to their hospital beds, they are sitting up, talking among themselves. Their entire bodies are covered in bandages. I sit beside Saichi and carefully hold her hand. Nile looks them over and slowly shakes his head. "This isn't good..."
"Why?" Hange asks.
"We might as well have died," Saichi replies, her voice very hoarse.
"What?!" Eren protests. "Captain, how could you say that? We lived to see humanity win!"
She huffs. "They were already going to kill us once we won. Now, they have every reason to. We are on our last leg. Besides, it will be for peace since we are the last abnormal beings alive within the walls."
"What are you talking about?" He looks at Nile. "They were going to kill us. Seriously?"
"That isn't something I'm really sure of, Eren," he responds honestly. "Don't forget that it's been years since you were first trialed. There are new people in charge but the final decision is still left with Darius."
"So you're saying I did all this for humanity just to be thrown away?"
"Eren, you should know how this works by now," Saichi begins to explain slowly. "You need to look at reality before you drown in that ridiculous fantasy you have going on in your head. This is how our government is. For as long as we were capable of serving them and helping them gain power, they kept us alive. Once their best asset is tampered with or corrupt or worn out, they get rid of it and find something new. It is exactly like a small child that would rather play with a new toy over the toy that has been drug through the dirt."
"So this is it? We're going to be killed without getting to live in peace for once?"
She slowly shakes her head, looking up at Nile and Hange. "When is our trial?"
"There will not be one. The other higher-ups will be meeting tonight now that the victory has been announced. Your verdict will be decided by morning. For now, just get some rest."
That's what they did. They slept, even though Eren did toss and turn for half the night. The next morning, Hange and Armin assisted them as they walked around out front just to get some fresh air. Saichi has a harder time because of her age but also because of her extensive use of the gear. The most damage to Eren is his arms and head.
We're about to go back inside when I hear horses, a lot of them. I, as well as Hange and Saichi, know what it means. Armin and Eren are a little frantic. A herd of Military police approach, Nile leading. A carriage comes from the back and out steps Darius with a cane for support.
The soldiers create this barrier so the two have no way to escape from this. This is their fate. Saichi meets Zackly halfway. He reaches up and clamps his hand down on her shoulder. Usually, she would immediately slap his hand away but she accepts his gesture. They talk but none of us can hear. Eren runs forward to protect but he falls, wincing from his reopened wounds. I click my tongue and get down to help him. I keep his arm around my shoulder while they continue talking.
Finally, Darius returns to the carriage. Saichi stands there, waving as they all depart. I raise an eyebrow as she comes back, smirking. "What..."Eren says. "What did they say, Captain?"
"He said they were going to execute us but then...he said he couldn't possibly allow us to be killed before we can enjoy the freedom we worked so hard to gain. On top of that, there's a young girl back at headquarters, waiting for us to come back."
Suri.
You're still young and you get to live the rest of your life with the freedom we could have only dreamt to have at your age. You can see the waters and animals, the beauty of the world that you can never see as long as you stay in the walls. Saichi is a legend, as I am humanity's strongest. We did what we had to for people like you who are innocent and deserve to travel beyond the walls. Take it. Take this freedom and soar with the wing Saichi passed down to you.
