Drinking Night

There are carriages pulled into this old inn with tired horses, the patrons stumbled in hungry and cold. It has white walls, dark wood, reddish carpet. You would never know there was classical music playing as there are loud voices of drunk soldiers yelling over it. You were almost greeted with a bottle of whiskey, just to get the mood started. It was only an hour into the night by the time everyone was rowdy and intoxicated. "Saichi..."

Over all of the noise, I hear Levi right in my ear. I controlled how many drinks I downed while Levi was dragged away and he ended up with three entire bottles of alcohol in his system before I found him again. I sat in one of the seats in a corner with him next to me. I just want to make sure he doesn't get any more wasted than he already is. He still needs to be able to get up in the morning. Of course, my effort is in vain. There are more bottles of beer and empty bottles of whiskey scattered on the table.

I set down my glass and look down. "Yes, Levi?"

His breath smells heavily of cheap wine and whiskey. It's terrible. His cheeks, neck, and collarbone are bright red and he can barely keep his eyes open. Maybe he won't remember tonight at all. If this is him tonight, he won't survive these next two nights. When he has the right amount of alcohol in his system, he becomes very affectionate and clingy. Ever since I sat him down, he has been kissing me, hugging me, holding my hand, telling me he loves me and touching my bare skin with his cold hands such as under my shirt or the back of my neck.

He yawns and buries his face into my shirt. "I'm ready to go now."

I'm sure you are. I guess we should leave now. It's about to be about two in the morning and I am beginning to feel a bit sluggish. I throw his arm over my shoulder and begin walking toward the door. Due to the commotion, it's a bit easy. Usually, we would be forced to stay and drink even more. I heave him into the coach and step up after him.

I have to lug him to our bed and get him out of his clothes so he can be comfortable. I know he's going to be tired as hell in the morning so there's no point in doing training while these drinking days are going on. I grab a bucket and set it by the bed in case anything comes up. Just one less mess to clean up.

Instead of going to bed as well, I go to my office and decide to do some cleaning. I begin placing a lot of my books back on the shelf. My office is a pig sty. Books are all over the floor, papers scattered and tons of finished with unfinished work on my desk. The dust has started to gather and it's beginning to feel stuffy in here. I slip on my glasses, roll up my sleeves and get to work.

As I'm finishing up my bookshelf, Hange comes in. He doesn't seem as tipsy as he would normally be. "Had fun?"

He laughs and nods, leaning against my door. "I was more of Erwin's escort tonight. I will definitely let loose tomorrow night."

"I look forward to it."

"Where's Levi?"

"Dead sleep. He drank almost as much as I did and he's like that. He's going to have one hell of a headache in the morning."

"So did Erwin. One arm or two, he can still throw them back."

"He's always been like that."

"Don't forget about Nile and Pixis."

"Don't even get me started with those two. I have never seen Nile smile so much in one night and, for once, Pixis looked young and lively."

I sigh and look at my hands. I can never recreate or forget moments like these. I am surrounded by memories and things that make it even harder to say goodbye. "You okay, Saichi?"

I feel the tears already burning in my eyes right before they drip down and hit the book in my hands. Why must everything die? Why does everything I come close to loving get taken away from me? "Am I really allowed to be this happy, Hange? Every time I think about it...I feel like my heart is going to explode."

He grabs me by the back of my head and press me into his shoulder. "Of course."
