Mayor's Questioning

Almost everyone is being questioned about the events that occurred inside the inner wall. I'm supposed to be waiting for the Military Police to take me to the Mayor of the Stohess District after he's through questioning Erwin. Since Annie was captured, they might spare him but he did get a lot of people killed in the process. People such as Levi and I look like accomplices in this act. Technically, we were. Erwin could be impeached or, worse, executed.

Levi goes into the bathroom behind me and I do make an effort to sneak away without his knowledge. Of course, as soon as I open the door, I hear him lean against the doorway of the bathroom. "I was never upset with you about not telling me."

I should keep walking but I don't. "Levi, I guess I owe the reason for why I never told you." We sit together on the side of our bed. "I wanted to do my very best to erase that part of my life. For good. All those things I was forced to do, the times my body was no longer my own. I wanted to forget it all. I thought being up here would help and having you by my side would do it well. Unlucky for me, it only haunted me more. The nightmares only got more realistic. Sharing a bed with you was only comforting when my eyes were open. Once I slept, it was back to where I started. The man that started it was executed and I wanted that to be the end but, for some reason, it only got worse. It got to a point that any human contact could trigger me. Living... Breathing around others scared me because I went through my childhood full of people that would only use me while someone else was profiting from it. Furlan and Isabel died before they could learn the truth but you, Levi, found out through a selfish noble who wanted to see me suffer. I guess he didn't realize I was already suffering just by existing in my own skin. I'm sorry, Levi."

"And the tattoo?"

"It was stupid. I wanted something that could possibly help me escape my hell. I wanted to fly away and never look back."

"Saichi, when you cry, do you ever feel like you're a coward and weak for doing so?"

What? "Yes. Why?"

"Did you ever stop to think that maybe you're crying, not because you're weak and worthless, but because you've been strong and holding the world on your shoulders for too long?"

I sigh and lean my head against his shoulder. Why do his words always hit it right where it needs to and bring me such...relief? "You might be right but maybe I never saw it that way because I just realized I have someone to hold on to me."

We sit in silence for what seems like forever. This is empty yet meaningful silence but neither of us is the ones to break. Two Military Police members come to retrieve me. They don't shackle me, instead just keep hold of my wrists as we walk. We stop in the conference room and they step to the side as one of the opens the door. At the head of the table is the Stohess District Mayor, Military Police lined along the wall. I expected higher-ups at the table but it's just him.

I sit down slowly and cross one leg over the other. I heard he's a tough man and I'm as good as dead. Anything and everything I have ever done is to his knowledge. He's a politician who oversees the business and affairs of the Stohess District. He is a middle-aged man with golden, sunken eyes. He has short, brown hair, with a thin mustache, and an average build. "So, Saichi... Yamazaki, right?"

"Yes."

"Well, let's get to the point. The damage to my district all comes back to your commander, Erwin Smith. You were seen by many witnesses helping Eren Yeager fight the Female Titan, who is actually Annie Leonhart. This report here says you requested a temporary leave yet you were seen in gear in the district of all this chaos. Mind explaining yourself?"

As he's talking, he is flipping through a bunch of papers. I get a glance at my name on every single one of them. The folder even has my name. I guess they have been keeping great tabs on me. "I wasn't trying to defy the law or anything. I was begged by someone from Garrison to assist Eren Yeager in the capture of Annie Leonhart. I didn't want to but I was the only one that could."

"As you did help in her capture, did you have any idea what kind of damage was caused and lives that were lost?"

"I have a fair idea, yes. At the moment, it wasn't my concern. Annie Leonhart took many of my comrades' lives and she was destined to take more. She had to be stopped."

"Were you aware of Erwin's plans of this capture attempt? The lure, the battle and the final takedown?"

"Down to the very last detail. We planned it together. We knew exactly what we were doing."

"You know, I was a bit excited to have a questioning with you. Around the inner walls, you are known as Erwin's loyal dog."

"I do carry out any order he gives. He is my commander after all."

"And you're his second in command. You are seen behind him and supporting like a dog would. I don't know about anyone else but that doesn't seem like a title a beautiful little girl like you should claim."

"For one, don't call me a little girl I am not that far from turning thirty. Second, I don't mind the title. Not even a little. I am a dog. I do everything I can so no one suffers in any kind of way like I did growing up. I protect trainees, fight for a Titan brat, throw myself in the midst of danger so my comrades can flee, agree to become commander knowing damn well I can't handle it and most of all I let myself fall miserably in love. At the end of the night, when all the lights are out and everything is silent, I will always be what I was born as. Nothing. To be honest, I don't mind because no one will ever have expectations for me that I have to meet. If you want to kill me for that, go right ahead. I've been waiting for that day to come."

He sighs. "What do you expect to come out of this? Eren Yeager is a threat to humanity and he needs to be-"

"I'll stop you right there. You have absolutely no place to complain about how many mistakes he makes or what kind of threat he is. You have saddled that teen boy, who I'm sure doesn't know his left ball from the right one, with the fate of humanity. He buckles under the weight sometimes, so what? No one else is willing to put up with the crap people like you put him through."
