I tap my pencil endlessly on the dining table, staring at the map of the area outside the wall. Suri is sleeping in my lap, her entire body resting against mine. She was so worried about my eye and there was nothing I could say to calm her. The hysterics are what got her so tired.

My plan can be perfect if I can just figure out what it needs to be. How can I use Eren and the new recruits? I have to think about who I'm putting on the front lines. I need reinforcements and help from the Garrison. I huff and run fingers through my hair. Dammit, Erwin. How the hell did you put up with this crap for so long? You better be lucky you lost your arm, or I would have waited a little longer before stepping up to be the commander.

It's late and I'm tired but I can't sleep until I have this plan the way I need it to be. The trip is in two weeks and I still have nothing to present to my subordinates. Our funders need numbers for supplies and I have nothing.

The chair in front of me moves and someone sits in it. Of course, it's Hange. He's always up this late. "Still having trouble?"

I continue tapping my pencil and nod. "Yeah..."

He takes my left hand and examines closely. I can tell what he's looking at. "You stopped wearing your ring..."

I pull my hand away and put it in my lap. My ring isn't just in any place. I keep it in my pocket. Feeling this hard object every time I move a certain way, reminds me it's still there and will always. "I just... don't want to wear it anymore."

"Is it because of what happened at the pub that first night?"

"You knew about that?"

"Anyone close to the door heard everything. And Levi had a huge bruise on his face the next morning."

I set the pencil down and look down at the table, sighing. "Our relationship was doomed from the start. When he found me in the Underground, it was the beginning of a trainwreck."

"You know, how the two of you met is still a mystery is everyone."

I lean my head against my hand. "The more I think about it, I believe it was pure coincidence. He wasn't looking for me and I wasn't looking for a savior. I was simply a number with a price for use."

"Number?"

"Back in those days, we were never referred by our names. We were always numbers that were categorized under letters. Clients signed up for which they wanted based on the age and also gender. They would write down that child's label then put in a request. From there, they were given an appointment time. It was sick but they were organized."

"How many did they have along with you?"

"During my time there, many would come and many would go. I was 'Z-356'."

"How did Levi find you? He wasn't... Right?"

"Of course not. As I said, it had to have been a pure coincidence."

"How old were you?"

"If I'm remembering correctly, I was about sixteen. Levi and Furlan were always years of my senior. This was long before we met Isabel. When I was supposed to be taken to my first client of the day, no one came. Hours passed and something didn't feel right. I wasn't upset I didn't have to give up my body but it was suspicious. Last time that happened to someone, she was killed for biting off a man's ear off and he was a high paying person so our...owner was very upset."

"So..?"

"Levi and Furlan stormed that place. From what I heard outside my cell, they had stolen from Furlan and Levi. Money. Money was the only way Furlan could help others that really needed it. Only idiots and people who really didn't know who he was would go to steal from either of them. When the man that was in charge of us was being held with a knife to his neck, he told Levi he would exchange one of his best 'workers' to extinguish his debt. I thought it was a fair deal, considering that sex took you a long way down there. If you relieved someone of their sexual frustration, they would repay you with what the Underground lacked."
