"Jacob!" I squealed. It was the first day of school and I hadn't seen my best friend since the Fourth of July. I ran towards him and wrapped my arms around him, our backpacks getting in the way.
"I missed you Cassie! How was summer camp?"
I shrugged. "It would have been better if you hadn't decided not to come."
Jacob and I had been going to the same summer camp every year since 4th grade, but this year Jacob backed out at the last minute. "I can't go for a month and a half without working on my music. I'll miss you though," is what he told me on the Fourth.
Jacob made a face. "I'm sorry, but I did this really awesome cover while you were away and I'm getting tons more views."
I smiled. Music was so important to him. For as long as I can remember he's been obsessed with singing or playing guitar. I thought he was REALLY good, but I could be bias. I have known him since kindergarten.
"I can't wait to hear it. Are you ready for school?"
He shook his head. "No. I feel like I didn't do anything this summer. It can't be over already."
I shrugged as the bus turned the corner and started coming down the block. "Guess you'll have to get over it. It's too late to turn back."
The bus was already almost full when it pulled up and Jacob and I couldn't sit together. He sat with our friend Dakota, who I also hadn't seen since July, and I had to sit with some random 7th grader.
Jacob and I already compared schedules, so I knew we would only see each other in homeroom and Language Arts. That sucked, but it was better than nothing.
I was one of the first people off the bus when we got to the school, so I waited off to the side for Jacob and Dakota. Dakota pulled me into a hug when he reached me. "Hey Cass. How was camp? I haven't seen you in forever."
I hugged him back. "It was good. I'm really good at archery now. It's weird."
Jacob and Dakota both laughed because I think we all remembered the previous summer when I nearly killed Dakota's dad while he was teaching us how to shoot in the back yard. "I'm glad you got better. I'll see you guys at lunch," Dakota said and took off into the crowd.
Jacob and I started walking towards the front doors in silence. Being our third year in middle school, we already knew where our classroom was. We followed the twisting hallways until we got there and finally turned to each other. "I don't want to go in yet," Jacob decided. "That means the school year's starting."
I shook my head. "Suck it up. We have to. I told Julia that I'd save her a seat."
I walked into the room and reserved a set of three desks in the third row. After 30 seconds or so Jacob came in and plopped down on my right. "At least we don't have to worry about new people," Jacob observed. "It looks like all the same kids since 6th grade."
Our homerooms were done alphabetically, so Jacob, Julia, and I were always together with the other kids who had last names at the end of the alphabet. When I looked up I saw a frazzled looking version of my best friend anxiously scanning the desks from the doorway. Our eyes met, her smile brightened, and she came over to sit at my left.
"Hey girl! How was camp?"
I rolled my eyes. "That's all anyone asks. It was great though. Me and Megs had a great time."
That's my cousin Megan. She was the only person who didn't bail on me for camp this year. "Awesome. We should all go again next year. It's our last year to be campers. You can't do it after you turn 15."
