Setting: The Martian.

"Do you miss her?"

Chris didn't answer. He was years away, and he was missing her pregnancy with their triplets. The last picture he'd gotten of her was when she was three months pregnant, and now she was six. He wasn't going to meet his child or see his or her birth.

"Hell yeah, I miss her man. I mean, think. I'm not going to meet my kids until they're one years old, Martinez. Do you know how much that makes me regret being an astronaut?"

"Man, you can't regret doing this. This is the coolest thing ever!" Chris shook his head. "Not when the beginning of your family is back at home."

Chris lay awake that night, wishing his wife was awake so they could Skype. He wanted to do more than hear her voice. He wanted to hold her, kiss her, care for her, and all of the things they'd normally do.

Sometimes he wishes he had turned down the offer. Sometimes he wishes he hadn't accepted visiting mars. This - this wasn't worth it.

He shot up, hitting his head when his computer rang. "Fuck," He murmured, scrambling to silence it before he woke up the others.

"Y/N? Why are you awake?" She giggled, smiling bright. "The babies are kicking, Chris." She whispered sitting crossed legged on their bed.

She lifted her shirt and he could see little hand and feet prints on her stomach. Seeing her smile was killing him. He miss her so deeply, but she was out of his reach.

"That's so amazing, baby." Her smile turned into a frown. "What's wrong, Chris?"

He sighed. "I just miss you is all. I want to be home. I want to be the one helping you, not my mom. I don't wanna miss out on their lives."

"You won't Chris. You're still their father. Pictures of you and I surround this house, and you won't miss out on much. They'll only be one, that's not too late to miss their first steps or words. We've got eighteen years with them. That's so many firsts yet to come." By now he was for sure crying. She had the best effect on him in the best way, and he loved it.

"I love you so much, Y/N." Chris wiped the tears from his face. "Look at the stars, Chris. Forget about the Science and look at the stars."

"Yeah, I see."

"Those are the same stars shining over me right now. Wherever you are, we're looking at the same stars."

Chris put his hand against the screen and you did the same. "I can't wait to look at all of the stars from the same place."

"Me either." With that, Chris went to sleep easy, thinking of the stars and dreaming of you.
