Setting: TFA
Bucky never realised how much his favourite past time could be watching the clouds.
It was his junior year, and he had started laying in the grassy field behind the school, only so he could come to peace with his thoughts and figure out what would be easy to forget once he enlisted in the army.
But one thing he couldn't mark off was you. His best friend, his anchor, the love of his life.
He had tried and tried to avoid you, and everything that had to do with you, so that he could start now and have had broken the connection by the time he shipped off.
But noooo, You and Bucky were way too in love with each other, and could barely stay away from each other for longer than and hour.
So when you came running out of the school, towards him with a letter in your hand, he stood nervously and smiled.
"I got accepted! I got accepted, Bucky!" His bright smile turned to a frown. He'd forgotten you'd applied for college already.
Before he knew it you were in his arms with your lips pressed to his. The kiss lasted longer than he'd intended, but hey, she was leaving. He had a right. Even though you weren't his girlfriend.
"I'm so proud of you, doll." He murmured into your hair, taking a good sniff of your sweet scent.
"I made it into Harvard, Bucky. Harvard! Aren't you happy?" The concern in her eyes easily showed that he did not in fact, look happy.
"Yeah. I'm so happy for you." He smiled sadly, taking his place back in the grass.
"Bucky. Tell me what's up?"
"It's nothing. You don't need to worry about me. You're going to make it."
"What and you're not?"
He gave her a look that easily read no. "Bucky, please. You're going to be successful and amazing and live to see 20...I don't know, 16." She held his face in the palm of her hands. "Don't ever doubt yourself. Cause then you will fail."
He hated how smart she was. He hated that she was never wrong. He hated that he hadn't stayed in school and kept up like she had.
"Look at the clouds with me."
She smiled, laying down next to him. "Okay, Buck."
"You know, I used to think that we'd be together forever. That'd you'd go to college somewhere close and I'd go with you. We'd finish, get a good job, settle down, few kids, grow old live a good life. But now..."
"Now what?"
"Now I see all of that. In the clouds." She had no idea that when Bucky saw something in the clouds, it meant he would forget about it soon. But to her it met it was set in stone.
"I love you so much." She rested her head on his shoulder.
"Until 2016, Doll."
