A Midnight Hike
Ruby hummed quietly,
Her footsteps padding,
Rather like a cat's
Silently
The mewing of her kittens echoed,
Shushing them
She continued the hike,
The wagon wobbles
Back and forth
On the worn cobbles
The satchel at her side grew heavy
Her cats became restless
"Ah, well,"
She mutters
"I suppose I could settle down
And rest for a spell."
Down in a cave,
She took a seat
On a stone
And rested her feet
On the kittens snored
And Ruby?
She soon became very
bored.
She sat there,
Prim and proper
When a head of copper
Appeared out of the wagon
Green eyes glowing like lamps.
He meowed quietly
And crawled
Onto her lap
And settled on top of her
Red woolen cap.
In the early morn,
Ruby headed off once more
The red woolen cap on her head,
Ragged and worn.
The wagon rattled
In the early dawn
And soon,
Ruby was gone.
