There are a few rules to writing dialogue, and a few tips to writing dialogue, but in my opinion, dialogue is one of the most freeflowing and relieving steps in writing.  There are only approximately two rules to stick to in my knowledge.

Every Character has a Unique Voice. Everyone has a different set of vocabulary, diverse way of speaking, and unique sense of comprehension and reaction. I've talked about this in Unique Character Voice but this needs to be especially evident in character speech. Especially for the fact that you may not give another character's point of view throughout the book.

I apologize for the restatement, but I wanted to merely put emphasis on how vital it is that it appear in speech.
