Sitting, hiding, and crying, I'm always all alone. I didn't understand why I was always being bullied. We're all children alike but they liked to make fun of me just for existing. By now, I was used to it.
"Mother!" I screamed excitedly as I swam inside the cove.
"I'm seven today! Can I finally learn how to make potions?" I asked enthusiastically.
"No my child, not yet. You are still far too young," she replied kindly.
My mother is the sea witch, well, at least that's what everyone calls her. She's a beautiful mermaid who never aged no matter how many years passed by. She was an orphan just like me and a court lady in the palace found her. She took my mother in and cared for her as her own child until mother grew older and began to show signs of magic. Merpeople feared her unusual ability and began to shun her. Not only was she eternally youthful, she was the only one who had the knowledge of how to create potions that healed and harmed. No one knew how such a thing could even happen. Her skills were feared and soon, she was forced out of the palace. She found herself this cozy cove and has lived here by herself peacefully since then.
This was a story I had begged her to tell me at the age of six. It consoled me that my mother was not a bad person like what everyone had been saying.
She was sorting out her sea herbs and bottles.
"Mother can I go out again today?" I asked swimming around the cove excitedly.
"If you wish to do so," she said elegantly.
"Thank you mother! I shall be back before you know it," I slyly said.
I swam out closer to the small town nearby and started to look around.
"Ew it's the cursed child of the sea witch!" screamed one of the little girls who saw me.
"Go away! You're not wanted here!" screamed the other kids.
They surrounded me in a wide circle and started to throw sea fruits and small seashells at me. I curled my tail around me to try and cover myself. I won't cry, I won't let them win this time, I thought. Building the courage, I was about to swim upwards out of the circle until I heard a soothing voice call out.
"Stop it! Stop hurting her!" said the little boy who swam in front of me.
I opened my eyes and looked to see who the voice belonged to. He was tall with a light blue tail that glittered with white scales.
Pretty, I thought.
"Why are you helping her?" asked the little girl.
"It doesn't matter, if you're with her then we'll just have to throw shells at you too," said one of the little boys.
They were aimed and ready to throw but I couldn't let this innocent boy cover for me so I quickly swam in front of him with my arms spread out to cover him.
"Everyone stop!" came another voice from above.
"What's the meaning of this?" he asked.
This boy had a darker colored tail. It was grey and silver so it reflected off the waves. Five other boys swam over and stood by him.
"She's the witch's daughter," said the little girl.
"Not anymore. From now on, you all treat her kindly. Any friend of Yugyeom's is a friend of ours," he said crossing his arms.
"Tch whatever. You better hope she doesn't curse you," said one of the boys.
They all dispersed and left.
"Don't worry, they won't bother you again," said the boy with the silvery grey tail.
"Um thank you and you too," I said turning to see the boy behind me.
"It was no problem at all," said the blue tailed boy.
"Why would you help me? Aren't you afraid of me too?" I asked honestly.
"Of course not. You have stars in your eyes. It shows that you are a kind person. You're unique and I want to get to know you. Besides, I don't listen well to what others say anyways."
"The babies of the group never listens to anyone," said the boy with the flashy purple tail. "Hi, I'm BamBam and this boy here is Yugyeom. That right there is leader. We call him JB."
"Hi I'm Y/N," I said in return.
"Yugyeom! Bam Bam! Hurry let's go play over there! Palli palli!" said the boy with the black tail. He stayed there where he was, looking at me. He didn't show any signs of wanting to leave just yet. Bam Bam on the other swam away.
"Shouldn't you go?" I asked.
"No, I told you, I don't like listening to others," he said jokingly.
"But don't mind him. He's Jackson. He's always super active and hyper. Come on, let me introduce you to the others," said Yugyeom.
"Um..." I hesitated.
"What's wrong?" he asked.
"I'm not so sure I should go with strangers," I said.
"Oh, then will you be my friend?" he asked nicely.
I blanked twice and smiled. "Of course! I'd love it if you were my friend!"
"Then there's no problem. We're not strangers anymore," he said grabbing my hand. "Let's go."
We swam up to the other boys who were tugging and hiding behind the seaweed shrubs.
"Everyone this is Y/N. She's my friend. Y/N, you've already met JB and Bam Bam but this here is Jackson," he said.
"Hello! Wow! You're a cute girl!" he says with big eyes.
"Excuse him, he's a little dumb. I'm Jinyoung. It's nice to meet you," said the boy with dark blue tail with green specks.
"Hello, nice to meet you too," I said.
"And this is Mark," said Jinyoung, pointing to the tall boy with the dark red tail.
"Hello Mark," I said.
"Hi."
"And that's Youngjae, the one singing to himself over there," said Jinyoung.
"He has a red tail too," I said under my breath.
"Yes but it's brighter," Mark added.
"Noted," I said, smiling.
"Hey Y/N! Yugyeom wants you to come play with us," said Jackson.
"Okay!" I swam over there quickly.
I finally have friends to call my own. Now I won't be lying to mother when I talk about them.
"Thank you Yugyeom," I whispered into his ears.
Yugyeom's P.O.V.
I blushed when she whispered into my ears. I've never had a girl as a friend before but something about her stood out to me. My father once said that those who can see the stars without having to go above the ocean had special fates awaiting them in the future and she held them in her eyes.
