The third day of the carnival arrived. I didn't really feel like going but mother insisted I do.
"Gyeomie, is there something you and my mother are keeping from me?" I asked.
"What do you mean?"
"...Nothing never mind."
We enjoyed the rest of the carnival. I was busy eating when I felt a tap on my shoulder.
"Excuse me. Can I have a bit of your time?" she asked, under her hood.
I looked at Yugyeom and then at her.
"Um sure."
"Can we go talk elsewhere? Where there's no one else around?" she asked.
I was skeptical about meeting a stranger away from the crowd.
"If I can come along as well then I don't see the problem," Yugyeom stated.
She nodded. We swam out and away from the crowd. She took off her hoodie and revealed herself.
"You're the queen! It's a pleasure to meet you your highness," I said as I bowed.
She grabbed my shoulders and stopped me.
"What is your name my child?" she asked.
"My mother humbly named me Y/N," I replied.
"Y/N? And who is your mother, if I may ask," she said.
"My mother...she's the sea witch," I replied.
"Ah I see. Did you know you have the stars in your eyes?" she asked.
"I was born with it. My mother never spoke about it," I said.
I held onto Yugyeom's hand tightly. Something felt off.
"And who is your father?"
"I don't have one. My mother found me when I was a baby and raised me," I replied.
"Does your tail happen to turn gold from time to time?" she asked.
"Y-yes it does. Isn't that normal?" I asked.
"Have you ever spoken to a sea creature with your mind before?"
Her eyes grew big and I worried. I gripped Yugyeom's hand harder and looked at him for help. He was calm, too calm. Like he knew this was going to happen.
"It's okay to answer," he said.
"But you said I shouldn't tell anyone," I whispered.
He looked down at me and nodded.
"Yes. I have. I have a dolphin friend name Forte," I said.
I was angry but confused all at once.
"Then I was right!"
Yugyeom removed his hand from mine as she quickly came and hugged me.
"You are my child! My Y/N!"
"What? I'm sorry but you must be mistaken. I'm not your daughter," I said.
She lets go of me and looks into my eyes.
"My dear. Only those with royal blood may speak to sea creatures with our minds. Only those of royal blood have tails that change color and your eyes, those stars were a gift bestowed to you my your father, the King. You are my Y/N," she said softly. She proceeded to caress my cheeks but I moved back.
"You knew didn't you?" I asked Yugyeom, not looking at him.
He stayed silent.
"I can't believe this. This isn't real. It's just a dream, just a dream."
"It's not, my child. You must come with me to the palace now," she said, holding her hand out.
"I...I need some time alone. I need...I have to go."
I stormed off and Yugyeom followed. He grabbed my wrist.
"Don't! You knew! You never told me!?"
"I just found out but I did have my suspicions," he said.
"And you! You can do the same things I can. You're a prince?!"
"I'm Prince Yugyeom of the third kingdom under the sea. I had my reasons to hide it Y/N, I really did!"
He tried to grab my hand again but I refused.
"I need to be alone. Please, let me be alone."
I swam off and sobbed. Everything was happening too fast. Who am I and why did I end up with mother if I was really a princess? I swam by the surface because the stars and moon always made me feel better. While I was in deep thoughts, I heard the flute that had once drawn me out.
"Jimin?"
I swam closer to the shore, ignoring my mother's words to never come up here again. I was right. There he stood, playing the flute with a sorrow feeling. I spoke the magic words and became human again. I swam up to where he was.
"You're here," he said.
I didn't say anything in return.
Without another word he hugged me, getting water all over his clothes.
"I thought I told you never to come back again," he said with a sad soft voice.
"I couldn't resist the sound of your flute," I replied.
"I missed you so so much," he whispered.
He still had his arms wrapped around me tightly, as if letting go meant saying goodbye again.
"I want to properly confess Y/N," he said as he slowly lets go.
"I, Park Jimin, admit I was wrong before but I, love you so much. Even if we can not be together, you were the first girl to ever hold my heart."
"Jimin-ah...that day...was it your lips that touched mine?" I asked.
"You remember? I thought you wanted to forget so I never brought it up," he said.
"They were soft," I said.
"I thought the same about yours."
He smiled warmly.
"Why do you love me?" I asked.
He started to list out the different things he liked about me, using his fingers.
"Mmmm you're funny, warm, challenging, adorable, and you pull at my heartstrings. I just love you for you."
"Jimin-ah...I don't know where my heart lies. I won't lie to you. I have a lot of different things going on right now that it's all so clouded."
I tried hard not to break down in front of him. He embraced me and stroke my hair softly.
"Tell me, the least I can do is listen and help you with anything," he said.
"My mother...I just met my real mother...Turns out I'm a princess. Funny right?" I said with a lifeless chuckle. "And my best friend...he was a neighboring prince. All these secrets that I never knew."
Jimin's shoulders were so warm and kind.
"What do you want to do now?" he asked.
"I don't know..."
"You can come with me if you'd like. I promise, this time, I'll treat you right. I will drop everything to be with you," he said.
I loved the sound of his voice and the smell of his scent but I stayed silent.
"But if that's not what you want then I understand. I support you no matter what. If you go back, just promise me that you'll do what makes you happy and always, always smile because that's when you are the most beautiful. It doesn't matter who your real mother is. The one who raised you is equally a mother to you. Choose what your heart wants Y/N. There's nothing to be afraid of."
I looked deep into his eyes.
"I know what I want now Jimin."
