~Chapter 21~

-SKYLARS P.O.V-

"Shes out of surgery." The nurse said, finally after hours of us waiting in the waiting room and for a second I was broken out of the trance I was in. The trance of my own thoughts running through my head, killing me emotionally, slowly. It was my fault she was here, if I hadn't left the store early she would've stayed with me, and she wouldn't be here. The pain on my heart felt worse than the pain of dying. This pain ate at me, at my head, at my heart. Hunter held me as I shook and he told me everything would be okay, but I couldn't bring myself to believe him this time. I didn't move when I heard the nurses voice, but my heart stopped it felt. Saying she was out of surgery, meant she was still alive, it had to mean she was, I couldnt lose anyone else. "Can we go see her?" Hunter asks and the nurse nods. "One person at a time. Room 235, 2nd floor." She said and I stood and looked at Hunter assuringly. "I need to." I whisper and Hunter nods as I walk past the big doors that led into a long white hall and I saw a couple people crying outside of the doors, that was me once, and that may be me again. I looked at them sympathetically because they had it worse, worse than I could imagine. I knew they had it worse, I could tell by their screams of loss as the long beeping noise played in the background. I hadn't realized I had stopped in front of a girl now screaming as she cried and I heard that long beeping noise once again from behind the door she was in front of. She looked to be my age. I knelt down and laid my hand on her shoulder and she looked up at me and I let a tear fall for her knowing she was in pain, a lot of pain. "I'm sorry." I whispered and she looked up and nodded and put her hand over mine, still sobbing. I stood and saw in the window what was a little boy, no hair, laying in a bed with a breathing mask on, that beeping noise was long and never ending and the girl sobbed, and let out small screams and I looked at her and nodded sympathetically. That's all I could do for her. I continued to walk slowly to the elevator, taking my time as I didnt know what would await me as I reached the top. I reached the second floor and immediately found the room, 235. I knocked quietly before walking in and I saw her. A cut across her forehead, her arm in a cast, cuts across her arms and shoulders, and stitches across her stomach. I saw Sam his hair a complete wreck and his eyes red as he cried for Hayley and I saw he was praying. "They said she will wake up soon." Sam says quietly. My heart broke for him, but at least I heard the beeping intervals meaning her heart was beating, that was my new favorite noise. I walked over to the other side of the bed and took her hand, the one that wasn't in a cast and I immediately started talking and Sam laid his head on the side of the bed listening to me. "Hayley, you're a fighter. I know you can fight through this. I know you can, and the second you're better we will go open our store." I say to nobody, hoping she would hear me. "We miss your sarcasm and your jokes, we miss your laugh." I say crying now. "We miss you." I say leaning my head on her arm crying and I held her hand, and for a moment it felt like she held back. "I know you're here." I say smiling and she moves her eyes under her eye lids and Sam sits up as her eyes flutter open and she sits up gently and pulls her hand away from mine to hold herself up and the pain on my heart is lifted for a moment and Sam's face lights up as he sees her eyes. "Hayley you're awake." I say excitedly but softly not wanting to scare her and Sam just smiles and crys as he puts his hand on her face gently. "Hayley, I missed you so much." Sam says and she looks at him and nods and takes his hand with her free hand and squeezes it. She looked at him with such love in her eyes and he returned the look to her. I knew they had found love. "Hayley we all missed you." I say happily tears streaming down my face and Sam nods and Hayley looks at me curiously. "Thanks that means alot, but-um, who are you?" She says quietly and all at once the weight on my heart comes back and it felt like a stab to the chest. "Skylar, your best friend, your co-worker." I say frantically and she shakes her head looking at Sam and I stare at her then at Sam. "Sam what's going on?" Hayley says almost sounding scared and I shake my head crying. "I-Im sorry Hayley." I whisper before I stand and walk out the door into the hall and I stop and lean against the wall and cry as a doctor walks into her room. He remains in her room for what seems like eternity before he walks out again and I look up at him. "Hayley and the baby are both okay, but she has lost some of her memory from the crash. All she remembers is the guy in there with her, Sam." The doctor says and I nod feeling hurt, but at least she was alive. "Will she ever remember?" I whisper and the doctor nods. "With time." He says and I nod and the doctor walks away. "Thank you God." I whisper as I lean my head on the wall thanking god for keeping her alive, for keeping her here with us. I couldn't be happier, whether she remembered me or not, she was here. I was grateful to hear the beeping in intervals signifying her beating heart, because I knew some people heard the same beep but as one line, meaning the end of one persons forever. Hayley's forever wasnt at an end, and I was grateful for that. I always would be.

-HUNTERS P.O.V-

I wait, looking at the white walls as the thoughts run through my head on whether Hayley was alive or not and I hear the nurse again. "You may go see her now." She says looking at me and I nod slowly. I stand and pick up Natalie and she stirs slightly wrapping her arms around my neck her blonde hair falling over my arm. I walk through the large door into a hall and there are few people outside of doors crying, I remember when I was in that position once as I thought I would lose my wife and daughter, and I felt their pain. I walk to the elevator and go to the second floor and in the halls were few people still, this time Skylar being one of them sitting outside a door with her head on her knees and she was curled in a ball. "Skylar." I say and she looks up at me and the tears were gone replaced by her once blue eyes that now looked grey. "She's awake." She says sadly as I look in the window and I see Hayley talking to Sam. "Then why are you out he-" I say and she cuts me off. "She has no idea who I am, or who you are." I hear her say and I sit next to her carefully not waking Natalie. She didnt remember. "I'm so sorry Sky." I say taking her hand and she shakes her head. "She's alive, the baby is alive, she doesn't remember the accident, and her memory of everyone will return with time. Just, be grateful she's here." She says and I smile and squeeze her hand and I pray to god in my head, thanking him, for keeping Hayley here, for giving Skylar hope, for everything. Though we would reach some bumps in the road, everything would work out, everything did, as long as Skylar's hand held mine everything was okay, no matter what the situation.
