The phone was slammed on it's base as a brown haired man leaned on his desk and covered his face with both hands.
Nothing, more nothing.
He was frustrated, he couldn't remember the last time he slept. He was either calling people or the phone was ringing off the hook. People were scared, officials were wanting to know status reports. Reporters were wanting details on the case. It was a never ending line of people to talk to and to turn away from the office, people to hang up on. Couldn't they see he was trying to work on the damn case and they were just slowing him down? He leaned back in his chair and stretched his arms above his head trying to loosen up the muscles in his back. After a moment he brought his right arm down and gave it a shake so that the watch on his wrist would face him so he could check the time. Damn, it was already afternoon. He glanced out the window, it was a dreary afternoon.
Better in here than out there.
He pushed his chair back with a loud scrape, there was a desk across the room from him empty where his partner should be. The young man shook his head, no telling where he was. Perhaps just as fed up with people as he was. He stood up and walked over to the window to open the cheap blinds a little more. It wasn't raining hard, it looked like just a sprinkle, but the clouds were gloomy, as if they needed a reminder that something was going on in this town. It was like mother nature herself was warning them.
As he stared a small tap sounded on the door he turned as a girl walked in with two coffee's in hand. She was a cute brunette probably a little younger than himself, a receptionist for the front desk. He smiled one of his charming smiles and he noted the slight flush on her cheeks. "Aaron, I figured you might want this..." She said as she sat one of the coffees on his desk. He walked over to her and picked it up. "Just in time, Lori, you read my mind." He came sat on the corner of the desk close to her. She used her free hand to push some wire framed glasses up her nose though really they didn't need any adjusting. "We... I... I just know you have... Been working hard...." She stuttered. He smiled and took her hand from her face and kissed the top of it. "You know... I could use a little lunch about now... If you are interested..." He said gazing at her lightly. "Oh yes..."
About that time someone pushed the door open and Aaron quickly got off his desk and looked at the newcomer.
"Jackson!" Lori, flustered, excused herself from the room and fled around the large man now standing in the doorway.
"Ah Chief." Aaron offered with a nonchalant salute. "Where is your partner? Have you two found anything yet?" He asked sharply. He was a large man with thick fingers, not out of shape but looked more like he was fresh from the military with the top of his head balding. "We're working on it." Aaron replied, annoyance showing in his eyes. "I keep getting calls..."
"Yeah, we all keep getting calls, someone needs to unhook the phone lines." Aaron butt in taking a sip of his coffee. The Chief looked annoyed but left it alone, he did point a beefy finger at Aaron, "We need results. Anything. A lead, and fast." He turned and stormed from the office, slamming the door behind him.
Aaron winced slightly and sighed before taking another gulp of coffee and turning to stare at his desk. Pictures spread across the desk. He put the coffee down and went around the back to the desk to get a better view. He picked each one up and began to pin it to a cork board on the wall. He stared at it a few moments before swearing under his breath, "I hope Lori brings me food..."
