Chapter 6 - Stuck

February Eighth, 2016.

The next morning Sophia wakes up with a steady stream of drool pooling out of her mouth.

Immediately, she sits up, wiping the drool off her chin before groggily stretching to reach her phone from her bed. Making sure it's early enough, Sopha smiles at the time before sitting up from her desk chair and making her way towards her bathroom, grabbing a towel and her favorite red flannel.

She washes up and dries her hair, deciding to leave it down and place a beanie on the untameable curls. Checking her phone again, she sees she only has a little bit of time left to do what she has planned.

Without bothering to put any makeup on, Sophia quickly makes her way downstairs, grabbing a muffin for some sort of nourishment before leaving the house.

It's a cold morning, so Sophia welcomes the blast of heat that hits her when she enters the school building. Only a few lights were on, leaving some of the hallways and classrooms dark and ominous as Sophia treks through the school, converse squeaking with every step. She throws her bag into her locker and places her phone in her pocket before heading off to her destination.

She runs to the very end of the school, stopping at the cluster of lockers placed right beside the gym doors. Scanning the numbers placed atop them, she smiles when she spots her target.

Glancing over her shoulders worryingly, Sophia opens Eithen's locker, thanking God that he didn't have a lock as she gingerly places the piece of paper atop his bag.

Last night, after Sophia remembered that one happy day long ago, she had the epiphany to do something that would certainly catch Eithen's attention, but wouldn't point himself to her just yet.

She wrote him a note.

Before that one night, years ago when she lost her best friends, Eithen and Sophia would give each other notes of little things they wanted to say. In passing during church, whenever she came over, during playdates or fun family vacations, those notes were always swapped between giggles and gleeful whispers. After the twins broke apart, the notes ceased and Sophia never heard from the Awrey boys ever again. She still has all their notes, however, buried neatly in a wooden box under her bed only for her to see.

Right as she closes the locker she hears the coach's whistle blow shrilly from the gym, making Sophia flinch as she looks up at the closed doors in surprise.

"Alright boys, get going and take some showers before you kill off the rest of the school population with your stink." His muffled voice reaches Sophia's ears as she hears some of the basketball team snicker before she hears another voice.

"I'll be right back," Eithen's voice brings a smile to her face. "I gotta go get my clothes from my locker."

Her smile falls.

Dread quickly seeps its way in her veins as she looks down the long hallway, realizing even if she took off now he would still see her.

Eithen casually walks out of the gym, not matching the frantic state of Sophia as he opens his locker, the door slamming into the one right next to his.

The one that Sophia is currently in.

The girl scolds herself in silence, any normal person would have stayed there bravely and faced the consequences of their actions, but Sophia is not normal.

She panicked the moment she heard Eithen's approaching footsteps and without a word she shoved herself into the small locker that was left open beside his, breath going quiet as he grew closer.
