Chapter 9 - Insomnia

A scream echoes through the empty house.

The dark walls crowding her scare Sophia, the girl fumbling wildly for her lightswitch while shakily gripping onto her neck, feeling for anything, anything. Hallowed gasps leave her mouth as she lays in bed, unmoving.

Slowly the panic leaves, but the silence surrounding Sophia gives life to sobs. Deep and heavy sobs as she slowly unravels underneath her blankets. Thunder crashing outside her window causes the girl to pull the covers tighter around herself, her eyes shutting in a desperate attempt to block out anything and everything.

After holding herself in that position for longer than she can remember, the shaken girl peels the cover off her cold body, shivering from the cold draft spilling in from her open window. She sits up, bending in on herself as her mind reaches for what had happened moments ago in her dream. She forces herself to forget it, standing up and wiping at her face in a desperate attempt to calm her still-racing heart.

She quickly closes her window and pulls the shades before backing away, standing in the middle of her room in a daze.

Night terrors are nothing new to Sophia, ever since she lost her mama sleep seemed to evade her no matter how much medicine she tried and how many methods she attempted. However, she never woke up that afraid before, so scared she didn't even want to move.

Her heart is still racing as she shuffles over to her bookcase. Pushing aside some bins, she reaches for a blue-capped pill bottle nestled between her art supplies and makeup. Grabbing from its contents and snapping a pill in two, she pops it into her mouth before swallowing it dry.

Once the melatonin is in her system, Sophia returns to her bed, mind racing much more than she wants it to. As long as she takes melatonin she won't have any dreams. Sleep isn't exactly a problem, but dreaming always seems to go somewhere dark and twisted with Sophia's mind.

Letting out a strained sigh that held back a sob from escaping, Sophia shuts her eyes, effectively trying to force herself to fall asleep despite what her body wants.

And she spends the rest of that night, eyes shut, but never finding peace.
