That night

November 12, 2001

Nine-year-old Sophia's Pov.

I sigh lightly with my head resting against the palm of my hand. My legs kick back and forth underneath the table and I perk up slightly when my dad strolls in from the kitchen holding two plates of yummy spaghetti.

"Here you go So-So, eat up before you head over to Connor and Eithen's," He says with a bright smile and places one plate with lots of spaghetti and garlic bread in front of me.

"Thank you!" I chirp brightly before picking up my fork and grabbing the parmesan shaker from the center of the table.

Once there's a hefty mountain of parmesan on the plate, I begin to scarf it down and almost finish in record time before my dad has even gotten through his garlic bread.

He looks at me oddly as I smile and let a small burp slip from my lips before looking up at him with puppy dog eyes.

"Alright." He sighs and gives me a small smile. "Off ya go and get ready so I can drop you off soon."

I cheer loudly and push away my chair from the table before sprinting upstairs with giggles of excitement. It had been a snow day today and my dad was finally back from another one of his business trips, so we talked and snuggled on the couch all morning before deciding to have yummy Italian food for lunch. Now I get to go over to Connor and Eithen's for a sleepover and I'm so happy!

I quickly throw my favorite pair of Pj's and some toys and coloring books into my backpack and throw it over my shoulder as I hop down the stairs and stand in front of my dad in the doorway.

He smiles down at me brightly before frowning and putting his hands on his hips.

"Now what are you missing?" He asks with a raised brow and I purse my lips in confusion and look all around until he taps my nose and points down.

I giggle as I look down at my sock-clad feet and throw a shy smile up at him.

"Oh." I giggle once again before grabbing my snow boots and squeezing them on.

"And your coat." Dad groans and chuckles as I huff and throw my backpack to the ground, reaching up to the hooks on the wall and thrown my baby blue jacket on before I place my backpack on my shoulder again.

"Alright bug, let's go." My dad pats my head before pushing open the door and I shove past him and down the icy stairs.

"Be careful!." He calls out to me and I nod my head as I slow down before stopping at the edge of the street.

I smile up at my dad as he saunters up to me and I loop my arm through his as we quickly cross the street after looking both ways and we walk up and onto the snowy porch of the tiny green house that stood tall and bright in the wintery street.

With only a single knock on the door, it swings open and I smile up at Mrs. Awrey who gave us a broad and white-toothed grin.

"Well hello there Sapphire." She winks down at me and I smile brightly as I run towards her with my arms open wide.

She takes me up into her arms as she holds me in a tight embrace. I sigh softly as I squeeze my eyes shut and snuggle into her embrace.

My mama had died almost around two years ago from now and no one could ever come to replace the role she held in my life, but Mrs. Awrey came really close as my second mom and the highest maternal figure in my life.
