It was cold

Everything was cold about the small cell. I spent a week inside the juvenile detention center before someone had paid my bail, allowing me to go home until the court date, though to my surprise, it wasn't my mom or dad, but instead David. I changed back into the clothes I was arrested in, got my belongings from a woman behind a glass wall, and was sent on my way. Dave's familiar truck was parked curbside, waiting for me though I didn't get inside, settling for walking instead.

"Andrew, c'mon! You can't be mad at me still!" He called, causing me to nearly snort in response.

"I can't be mad, huh?" I asked, fingers running over the slight stubble that began to poke out of my skin.

"I just got fucking arrested because of you. I spent a week in there. Not you. I was the one who didn't want to go to that stupid fucking party. I wanted to go home. You made me go. I wasn't the one who fucked some random girl. That was you!" Each word was laced with venomous hatred, my fists clenched at my sides.

"You don't fucking understand what it's like to be me! You don't understand how fucking hard it is to get through each and every day when your parents genuinely don't like you! They don't like me, David! They wish I was my brother. Oli wouldn't have done something so fucking stupid as this, but guess what? I did!" The lump in my throat began to grow, my breathing becoming heavier as my voice began to waiver, chest and throat becoming tight as my eyes began to prick with tears.

"My family fucking hates me, man. They didn't even care that what happened to me happened. They didn't want me out." I was now crying harder than I could've ever wanted to cry in front of David, and as I began to hiccup for air, I knew there was no going back.

"So don't fucking tell me who I can and can't be mad at." I firmly spoke, wiping my eyes on the sleeves of my shirt.

"I don't want to know you or any of your friends anymore, alright? I should've gave up on all of that a while ago when I said I was done the first time, but I mean it now. David Escamilla, you are the worst thing that has ever happened to me." The words I spoke made my stomach drop, and by the look on Dave's face, I could tell the feelings were mutual.

"I pray to God you get thrown in jail and meet someone who does you in for all the terrible things you've done in your life. You're a disgustingly evil person." I spat the words at him, wanting him to feel the pain I felt before stepping away from the curb.

"Now leave me alone." I snapped, wiping my eyes as I crossed the street, Dave having not moved since I began speaking, his truck idling as my hatred filled the air.

I didn't turn back. I didn't think twice as I marched my way back home. A weight was lifted from my chest, yet a new one was left in its place. I walked for over an hour before I made it back home, the house completely empty, both of my parents nowhere to be found.

They left you. They don't want you.

"It's not true." I spoke the words aloud in an attempt to convince myself that maybe things weren't as bad. That they would get better and things would be okay, but the more I created fantasies of better realities than mine, the more I realised how utterly untrue it all was. I made my way to my bedroom, plugging my phone in on the charger before looking to the old record player on the glass table, grabbing The Devil and God are Raging Inside of Me By Brand New and placing it on the player, watching as the needle touched the record, the small sound of static filling the air before the familiar rhythm of Sowing Season began to play. I turned the volume knob up all the way before taking a seat on my bed, head resting in my hands as I listened to the song, my heart lurching unevenly, making an all too familiar pain in my chest, the pain causing my wrists to ache as well.
