Hayden didn't come back to class. He didn't come back to school that day at all. The only upside to Hayden getting suspended was that his parents weren't home to know, the pair having decided to take a quick trip to Mexico for the time being, meaning Hayden would be free from the consequences until their return.
Another upside:
Brandon's dad owned a bar, which meant Hayden's week from school was a celebration rather than punishment. Hayden had signed the papers on his parents behalf, dismissing him from school for the rest of the day. The texts came quickly, a group chat between Brandon Hoover, Brandon Valdez, Jacob, David, and myself, each of the boys sending special requests to Brandon for what drinks to take from his dad's liquor supply and each of them promising to bring something in return, all but me.
'Andy? Want anything?'
Brandon sent, making my stomach churn.
'I think I'm gonna sit this one out.'
I replied, phone quickly vibrating in response.
'Don't be a bitch.'
'Fucking punani shit.'
'Pussy!'
'C'mon!'I laughed at each response, itching behind my ear with a sigh.
'Anything. He'll have anything.'
Dave replied on my behalf, making me scoff. I didn't want to party. Quite frankly, I wanted to stay home and look through the journal more, possibly see if I could find another clue within the old pages, but another text cancelled my plans all together.
Dad:
'We need to talk.'
I swallowed thickly, deleting the message quickly before pulling up the message strand between David and myself.
'Mind another sleepover?'
'Not at all.'
I couldn't help the small smirk playing at my lips although it wasn't meant to be taken as anything other than completely platonic.
Getting through the day was the easy part, drifting from class to class until the final bell chimed. I felt an arm around my waist and a hand over my mouth as I stepped into the sun, causing my brows to furrow, the familiar scent of Dave calming my fears before they could form.
"You're supposed to scream or something, man." He huffed, letting me go. I only scoffed in response.
"You're fucking gay." I spat, making him chuckle slightly, although he didn't deny it. He grabbed the bag from my shoulder and lead the way to his truck, throwing my bag in the back before he got in, myself only moments behind.
We arrived to Brandon's house an hour later, Dave having decided to stop for gas and snacks, along with a backpack from his house, the stench of skunk not leaving much to the imagination. He lead the way inside the large house, my eyes widening at how neatly kept it was.
"His parents live here. They split up and alternate who lives here with Brandon and his twin brother Brent, and who leaves to stay at their separate apartments. They sometimes ask their parents for days alone. Their parents kiss their asses because they think the boys are grieving. They don't realize we're draining their booze and using them to clean up the mess." Dave laughed, making my brows perk.
"Evil genius, huh?" I asked, making Dave smirk.
"Fucked up kids whose parents aren't around to give a fuck." He responded, my head nodding in time with his words.
He wasn't wrong.
Dave placed his backpack in a closet under the stairs, closing the door before making his way to the kitchen where various bottles of alcohol stood on the counters like crowned family jewels, some unopened, others halfway gone. Dave opened a beer, tipping it back before offering me one. I kindly declined, and he made a face.
