Whoever came up with 'The first night is always the hardest' was full of shit. I had been at the new house for three days, and I was already done. Each day started the same: wake up shivering, bitch and moan about it, be ignored, and repeat. Today was Monday, and as part of the agreement with my mom, I would attend school. The agreement was if I went to school, she wouldn't pick me up or drop me off. I would do it myself to avoid embarrassment.

"Andrew! Hurry up! You can't be late, and you still have to take your medication!" She called, evoking an eye roll from me. She liked to pretend that I wasn't feet away from her. As if the house was as big as it was before, when in reality, her demands could be heard by the neighbors.

"Why do I even take these?" I asked, grabbing the variously colored and shaped pills from the palm of her hand. I had been taking them for ages, yet I never knew why. She dispensed them to me, and never allowed me to see the bottle.

"Sweetheart, you know why. Your father and I don't want you getting sick again, therefore you take them. Okay? Good. Now c'mon. We have to get going." She urged as I swallowed the last one down.

Sick. It was funny how she always said I had gotten sick, yet I myself couldn't recall ever even getting the flu. The house was still a disgusting mess, flooring in patches and garbage scattered across the ground. I grabbed my bag, slinging it over my shoulder and following her to the car. We started on our way, the steady rumble of the engine making my feet go numb. My mom always had nice cars and fancy jewelry. My dad made sure that every need was met, and the large lump sum of money that was left behind by my grandfather didn't hurt either, but like everything else, even the nice cars were gone. Selling them was the final say, getting a couple thousand for each and buying an old shitty pickup to downsize. The shaking came to a stop as we turned the corner and my mother cut the exhaust.

"First day." She smiled, expecting me to smile or hug her, or whatever she wanted. Instead, I only nodded, looking at the large masses of buildings in front of me. It didn't look like a high school. It looked like a ghetto college for low end families, and a few of the wealthy. I jumped out of the truck, feet hitting the cold ground with a small thud. The thing about Texas was that there was literally no in between. It was either blazing hot, or hell frozen over. I pulled my jacket closer to my body and my knees began to shake. My mother and father always force fed me, yet I was still a twig. I was smaller than most girls, and practically all guys. My knees hit together, and the gap between my thighs made it impossible for friction to occur as I walked. She honked twice before pulling away from the curb, speeding away quickly to avoid my less than friendly retaliation. I kept my head down as I entered, what I was guessing to be, the front office doors. They opened with a shrill creak, the scent of pumpkin pie and vanilla filling my nostrils and making my stomach growl.

"What can I help you with?" A woman with freakishly long nails asked me, smiling softly as an attempt to keep me from scurrying away like others probably did.

"A-Andrew Velasquez." I stuttered, rubbing my hands against the fabric of my jeans. I bit my tongue as the stutter happened, wanting to choke myself with the strings of my hoodie. She cocked a brow, not understand why I had told her my name.

"It's my first day." I signed, rolling my hands as if that was going to help her comprehend. She nodded quickly once she understood, standing and leading me to an office only four hundred feet to the left. She knocked twice and opened the door, allowing me to walk in first before walking in herself. I took three steps inside before being greeted by the stench of coffee breath along with a small tinge of what I guessed to be alcohol.

"You must be Andrew. I'm Mr. Abney, and I am the dean of students here at ol' Compass High. Hopefully this will be the only time you have to come into this office, because if you're sent here, it's generally because you've done something bad." He began to snort at his own terrible joke, if it were to even be considered that. I gave gave him a half smile in response, mumbling slightly as I did. He was a fat, disgusting man that was balding faster than the ice caps could melt. He had no neck due to the fat that nearly suffocated him when he opened his mouth, and his voice was nasally.
