I managed to stay under the radar for two and a half weeks before Dave noticed me.

Wednesday.

Wednesday. A fucking Wednesday out of all days. The bell had rang, signaling that third period was over, one of the few classes I actually had with Dave. I always seemed to manage to get myself out of the room before he noticed me or slip down a random corridor just as he stepped out of the room, but of course that wasn't my luck. I stepped out of the room quickly as an attempt to get away quickly, but was pulled back just as quickly as I was trying to leave.

"Faggot." An upperclassman spat, pulling my backpack off as the contents of it scattered across the floor.

"Get a fucking haircut." The other one snarled, spitting on my shoes as he walked past. I nodded in response, muttering 'fuck' under my breath as I got to my knees, reaching for each fallen object. As I grabbed for my geometry homework, I noticed a pair of black Doctor Martens that came to my side, the owner of them dropping down to help me. My eyes met his and I felt a small heat begin to rise, my hands beginning to falter.

"Hey, kid." He smirked, handing me one of the various composition notebooks that was scattered around the two of us. I gave him a silent thank you before retuning my attention to the nearly empty backpack.

"You been avoiding me?" He smirked, winking after. I scoffed slightly in response, nodding in a joking manor before reaching for my World History binder.

"Totally." I began to laugh, pushing the binder down into the black Jansport. His signature smirk pulled slightly, growing wider before returning to its normal stance.

"That's your first time speaking to me. I'm beginning to believe that you are." He added, pushing me slightly before scooping up the last of my things for me and putting them in the large pocket of the backpack. I half rolled my eyes before standing, Dave doing the same milliseconds after. I looked at the half mucus half saliva glob that was beginning to absorb into my shoe with a look of utter disgust, refraining from gagging for everyone around me to hear.

"Upperclassmen giving you a hard time?" He asked softly, his eyes scanning over mine and locking into a serious facial expression. I shook my head quickly, even if it meant I was lying. I didn't need his help to scare off the people that had assaulted me minutes before, in fact, it didn't even bother me that they had. He rolled his eyes in response, clearly not buying my bogus answer.

"So you threw your own shit around like that?" He asked, a tinge of annoyance in his voice. I nodded slowly, eyebrows slightly knitting together in concentration.

"Yeah. I pulled on it too hard and the zipper was open. My bad." I lied once more, my irritability growing with each word. He signed in response and rolled his eyes, fixing his beanie seconds after.

"I'm trying to help you out here." He hissed, eliminating any and all space between the two of us, grabbing my arm to keep me there. He tightened his grip on my arm until I was beginning to squirm, nearly yelping in pain.

"Fuck, man. Lay off." I snapped, yanking my arm back from his grip.

"Listen, it's rad that you want to help me out, and I'm thankful for that, but don't touch me like that. Alright?" I asked, my annoyance clearly evident. I fixed the sleeve of my hoodie before taking a step back from him and adjusting my bag.

"You're really cool and all, but I'm going to be late to my next period if I don't get going." I lied, sighing loudly as if I were flustered. He looked at me with a mixture of anger and disbelief, eyes turned to slits and fists balled as if he were going to snap my neck at any given moment.
