~ooooOOOoooo~
Mom and I were shopaholics. I won't hide that. I mean, it was pretty obvious with the variety of bags we held, all from different shops.
She made me laugh; every time she remembered 'Shit, I gotta start the research!', she would spot a cute little store we missed out on, and spend the next forty five minutes tearing through it. That happened at least six times before I snatched her wallet and shoved it into my handbag, promising to give it back only after she had two pages of notes written down.
So that was where we were; the first expensive jewellery store.
"Mom..." I couldn't look away.
"Hmm?" she didn't turn away from the display cabinet she was observing. Why did she find the cabinets more interesting than the jewellery?
"Check this out," I literally had my nose and hands plastered on the glass separating me from the glittering hair pin. It had a complex flower design with beaded strings spiralling down the long pins. The flower itself was made of a few gems, mainly blood red and emerald green.
Mom glanced at it before scrunching her face.
"Yeah, it's alright. But the flower could've been done better."
My shoulders sagged. I forgot I was dealing with a professional. She was hardly ever impressed with jewellery. That was one of the reasons why she hated going on research trips to the stores. She could never fill up even a page of notes.
I sighed as we exited the our third shop. At this rate, we wouldn't ever finish two pages and that would mean we couldn't return to our shopping marathon.
As we passed the food court of the mall, mom was stopped by a man in his early fourties.
"Julie?"
Mom did a double take as she heard her name.
When he got the response that she was indeed Julie, he smiled. His eyes weren't exactly blue, but neither were they green. It was somewhere in the middle. Either way, they were beautiful.
"Hey, it's me, Chris."
After a quick scan of his face, her face lit with recognition. "Ohhh, Chris! How have you been? What are you doing here?"
He scratched the back of his neck and flashed a goofy grin. "Ahh, I've been good. I was just, you know, passing by and- is that your daughter?"
He noted my presence.
"Yeah, she's Grace. Grace, this is Christopher, one of my past clients. Speaking of which, how'd it go?" she wagged an eyebrow.
"How'd what go?"
"Your engagement!" Mom looked excited, but something was off.
"Ohh that! Umm, I got unlucky again," his grin dropped for a second, but it was quickly replaced by a crooked smile. "Ack, that's a different story. What're you two doing? Buying yourself a new wardrobe?"
Mom chuckled and I couldn't stop a little laugh either. "We do look a little funny with so many bags don't we?" she looked at the bags, suddenly a little self conscious.
