Book: Left Unexplained

Parts: 37
This is a story about a girl named Grace and her trials and tribulations with school, friends, family, and boys. There is mystery, thrill, death, and love.
Grace is a teenage girl that gets put in situations anyone would be horrified about. Her father and mother are separated, and her dad comes to stay with Grace for a month after not seeing her for 10 years. Chaos and confusion immediately ensue.
Although this story is labeled as a teen fiction, I'm not sure that's the correct designation. When I think of teen fiction, I think more of childish antics and themes that teens would encounter throughout daily life. This is a read that any adult would be sucked into. The way the author introduces twists and turns with a heavy dose of mature themes, such as death, makes me think a correct designation would be mystery or thriller. Because even though this is quite literally a fiction about teens, any adult looking for a good read would be more than happy to read this.
The characters are mostly likable. Grace has some scenes where you can't help but think that her reaction doesn't correlate to the situation. But as the story continues, the author helps the reader understand her reactions to such situations. What is most prominent is the author's understanding and love for her own characters. I found myself enjoying the author's notes because of this. They often contain little snippets of interaction between her and the characters which are unrelated to the story, but allow the reader to connect even more with said characters, and even the author herself.
Chapter 30.5 is an especially fun surprise that proves this. It's a chapter where the author and the characters of the book interact, and the author only shows how well she knows her own characters. It's enjoyable, even if it isn't a plot-driven chapter.
The writing itself is extremely polished, with only a few grammar or spelling errors sprinkled throughout. I was pleasantly surprised to find that the author has a strong and mostly seasoned understanding of word choice and sentence structure.
The plot is continually pushed forward with very few filler chapters, if any. The author knows how to keep you on the edge of your seat. At times though, it is difficult to distinguish whose POV the story is being told in. This is rectified quickly, but I still had to go back to reread the chapter to understand better what was occurring in said chapter.
This reads more as a serial than one single book. There are new plot lines and characters introduced as the story continues, which I didn't dislike. It kept the story fresh and engaging.
Overall, I would give this story a 4.5 out of 5. The main draw back would be the character's reactions to some situations that seem unbelievable. I would recommend this book to anyone looking for a good mystery with several major twists and turns.
