Getting to class was no problem. Getting my books out weren't either. Laying out my stationery; not a hassle.
It was only when the substitute walked in that my body decided to malfunction and my mind had a breakdown.
Mr Tomato!...or was it Potato?!
Either way, I sunk low into my seat, hoping to to avoid his beady eyes spotting me.
When I returned to this school, among the people I searched for was Mr Potato. I thanked the Lord when none of my classes had him as the teacher. I didn't want to go through the trouble of explaining myself as to why only one of my classes had me drowning in fails. Who would believe me when I told them that a cartoon character replica held a grudge against me?
My eardrums nearly shattered as he began in his squeaky voice. "Okay, listen up. I'm not supposed to be here, but your usual teacher got a lucky break with some sort of emergency. I'm supposed to be having this period off, so if you don't give me a hard time, that'd be great."
No one needs you here, you can piss off now- is what I really wanted to say, but I was a little too preoccupied making myself invisible.
"What are you supposed to be having now?" he asked the class.
"Legal studies," someone replied.
His face scrunched, like he was disgusted. "Hate that subject."
'No shit, with a face like that, you'd be arrested for plagiarising Toy Story,' I mentally snorted.
"Ahh well, I'm getting paid for this. So, let's talk about legal stuff. Kids, never land in jail."
"Actually sir, we learn about laws that could or couldn't get us in jail," some shorty goody-goody girl raised her hand.
"Fine then, kids, never skip school. You'll be jailed for truancy. And nev-"
"Actually sir, skipping school will only result in juvenile."
His nose twitched slightly, a characteristic I picked up on years back. Whenever he got irritated, he would do that. "Okay then, truancy will get you in juvenile, not jail," he glared at the girl who was oblivious to his annoyance.
"Moving on, never run away from home. Ma and pa and your big brother might be bullies, but the police will be the ones to track you down if you run away, and it'll be you who'd end up in jail," he abruptly pointed at the delinquent-looking dude sitting next to the windows. His wild hair and backwards cap gave him the badboy look. He lifted a bored eyebrow, questioning how he was related to any of this nonsense.
"Actually sir, Jack is a happy guy. He isn't being bullied by his mom or dad, and he doesn't have an older brother. He is nice to his little sister too. Also, if he did run away, he'd be sent to juvenile," her hand was up again. Either she was unobservant for not seeing his rising annoyance or she just couldn't care less.
For his short temper, Mr Potato was doing quite a good job at not retorting to her. "And how would you know so much about Jack? Is he your boyfriend?"
She blushed profusely. "N-no sir! I just, I actually don't know!"
"And why are you so hung up on juvenile? You been there or something?" he was just trying to rile her up. Everyone knew a girl like her couldn't even possibly think about getting herself in trouble.
"Definitely not, sir! Actually, I just wanted to point out that most of use are too young to be sent to jail, and so it would be more fitting to refer it to as juvenile."
"Girl, what's your name?"
"Samantha, but they actually call me Sammy."
"Sammy, I actually couldn't care less about what you think would be more fitting to be in my lesson. I would actually like it if you don't raise that hand of your for the rest of my class. Actually, I don't even want you in my class," he emphasised all the actually's to make fun of her.
