Chapter 8

━━━━━━━━━

Clarity nodded to herself, playing with the ends of her hair in the mirror just to the side of the door for about the twentieth time in the last minute. She huffed as she thrust her hands back down to her sides. Blake wouldn't care what her hair looked like. He wouldn't care that she had since changed into a more casual date outfit. At least what she considered casual. He didn't even care that she had been sitting in an office working all day, because he had been doing just the same. He was the one who called her wanting to have another date.

She had questioned it. She had thought it over many times throughout the day. It was dangerous none the less, to even talk to Blake. Scratch that, even think of Blake. Let alone actually meet up with him, at her apartment. The one more dangerous step could be eating at his place, but that may cross a line. They had already been there when Marcus hadn't been around.

Imagine if he had actually walked in on the two.

Clarity shook her head, pulling her phone out of her pocket as she felt it buzz. She had placed it on vibrate earlier at work. Ring tones half annoyed her anyhow.

"Hello?" She breathed absentmindedly. She was thinking of Blake. Better yet, she was hoping it was Blake on the other side of the phone. She could make out a quick scoffing sound before she finally concluded who it was.

"Hello." Andy mocked snidely. She could practically see the look on his face now. Her little brother, attempting to make his face look more like her own by puckering out his lips, all while pushing his voice up a pitch or two.

"What do you want?" Clarity huffed in annoyance as she swiftly kicked off her high heels near the couch. She definitely knew Blake would prefer it if she wasn't taller than him. Why not leave the heels off for the night?

Andrew laughed quickly, the sounds from the background coming through. "Where are you?" Andy asked through what sounded like a mouthful of food. Come to think of it, it sounded almost as though her little brother was in a restaurant somewhere.

"Home." Clarity replied as she sat down on the couch. How long would it take for Blake to get here? "Why? You bored?" Clarity shot back, smiling to herself as she did. The two were close, so Clarity could instantly tell when something was up with him.

"Um, no." Andrew started, seemingly leading into something more important. "Family dinner?" He began again. "Murphy's here with us? Mom and Dad will be here in a little bit-"

"Shit!" Clarity hissed as she jumped up from her place on the couch. "I completely forgot about that!" Clarity whined as she ran her fingers through her hair. The other day when Clarity had sat in at lunch with the two's parents, they had been complaining that Andrew hadn't been there with them. They had even commented on Murphy's absence. But the two parents were stubborn enough to not want to go out for drinks later with the three.

Thus, the dinner invite.

"Well get over here." Andy laughed. "It doesn't take that long to get from your building to the restaurant."

"Andy!" Clarity hushed. Of all people, she did not need Murphy knowing where she was, or even more so, what she was about to tell Andrew. "I can't come." She whispered once again.

"Why can't you?" Andrew asked, the confusion sounding in his voice. Clarity rolled her eyes.

"Well before I tell you, you need to move away from Murphy." Clarity urged, hoping her brother would go along with her small request.
