Chapter 16

━━━━━━━━━

The two walked in silence, neither one daring to speak as Blake flashed his company card to the bouncer. "Welcome, Mr. Greenberg." The bouncer greeted with a small smile. His smile faltered as he gazed around to the young, hopeful date of the CEO. The bouncer narrowed his eyes towards the girl in recognition. "And guest." He hissed lowly.

Blake sent a nod to the bouncer before pushing past him, leading Clarity into the small lobby area outside the dinning room. It was a conference room, really, where the dinner was to be held. But it had been converted for the sake of the event. This, the building the two had entered, was Greenberg Enterprises Japan. Clarity had never once been inside either one of the Greenberg buildings. Not even the one in California. Despite the fact her mother had been a previous employee at the establishment. Even Blake had made his way into the lobby of Davenport Industries... Twice.

"People are going to wonder why I'm here." Clarity tried as she slowly pulled her hand away from his. He laughed and shook his head, grabbing onto her hand once again. He hadn't been planning on letting her go. Especially after all that had happened over the last few months.

"They won't." Blake reassured. He had a general idea of how the night would go. The small talk Clarify was fearful of hadn't exactly been number on one his agenda. The employees at Greenberg Japan were terrified of Blake to say the least. Blake had also assumed their night would be cut short by the fact that Greenberg Enterprises Japan was about to become nonexistent.

"They will. They'll ask, and they'll keep asking until one of us gives them an answer as to why I'm here." Clarity repeated, forcing Blake to stop along with her in the lobby. "How do we explain this?" She asked as she motioned between the two of them. "When someone asks what I'm doing here, or how we're suddenly on good terms..." She left off, her eyesight falling to the ground. "We're rivals, Blake." Clarity crossed her arms over her chest.

The man sighed as he pulled his girl in closer to him, dropping her hand and letting his own hands rest on her waist. She was nervous, he could tell that much. The two had never been seen in public together, much less the two showing up as dates at one of the most important company events of the year. A Greenberg company event, no less. "They won't ask questions as long as you stick to me like glue." Blake whispered with a teasing smile her way. She sighed as Blake took her hand and brought her into the large conference room.

There was soft classical music playing about the large room. The guests looked as though they had been preparing for this night for weeks, every one of them looked like they had spent a fortune on their outfits. A large screen was hanging down from the ceiling, a live feed of the stocks and bonds that the company had invested in displayed for all to see. A large, tan satin curtain was hung just behind the screen, most likely hiding any electrical chords. There were round tables covered with a white table cloth and a blue satin runner. There were tan padded chairs sitting just next to each of them. The floors were a red and gold pattern, while the ceiling and walls matched up. The walls were lined out in rectangles shining with gold. There was a tan tint to the pain that laid in between each section of the walls. Everything about this place screamed money.

"Okay." Blake whispered as the two stopped in the doorway of the event. "We need to separate for just a second." Blake relayed as he took in slow breaths. He could feel Clarity tense at his side. He knew his words would shock her.
