Despite his busy schedule he still makes it a point to spend quality time with her.
The distance enforced by their parents when he was in college only made them closer. The saying that distance makes the heart grow fonder cannot be any truer for them. From late night phone calls, to weekly stolen coffee dates, to weekend outings masked as school projects.
They're like two dating couples who are actually star-crossed lovers. And that may just not be too far from the truth.
Maine will be graduating soon, with flying colors at that. Couple her brains with her classic beauty men started flocking around her just to get her attention, and girls all wanted to be her friend to get her brother's attention.
She hated it – the attention.
Maine has always been and will always be a wallflower that would rather hide behind someone else's shadow. She would rather go unnoticed in a crowd and enjoy observing them than be one with the crowd, much less be its center of attention.
Richard is supposed to pick her up today after school and bring her to this posh place to celebrate her soon graduation. Because of the limits imposed by their parents, Richard is not allowed to even attend her graduation rites.
If he can't be there on the day, he will make way to celebrate it with her before anyone else.
He's already been waiting for her for about 30 minutes now. And Maine is never late. She is a stickler for punctuality.
He was about to call he phone when he spotted Caila. He always see her around Maine so he assumed that they must be friends.
"Hi, Caila right? Do you know where Maine is?"
"Oh Maine's brother. Yeah, she was talking to Marky just a while ago. I think they're having coffee, are you here to pick her up?"
But there is no Marky. And there is no coffee date. Caila was one of those girls who wanted to get close to Maine because she find Richard really interesting.
"Oh, ok. We're supposed to have dinner, where are they?"
Caila knows an opportunity when she sees one and this opening might just be what she is waiting for a long time now. She touched his arms to stop him from walking away.
That's how she walked in on to them. Caila's hand around Richard's arm and he doesn't seem to be bothered at all. He is actually looks like enjoying the attention.
He was never like that with her. I mean, she thinks that he does enjoys her company but he was never comfortable when she touches him. She can feel him flinch whenever their skin touches. For her it's delicious electricity, he just wishes that she could say the same for him.
She started walking away when Richard saw her.
"Menggay! Where are you going?"
"I saw you talking to her, laughing with her. You we're already having so much fun, why would I want to interrupt that."
"Laughing?"
"Go back to her. It's so obvious that you enjoy her company much." There was so much acid in her voice, it caught him off guard. She is always sweet so this change in her demeanor confuses him.
That moment of confusion gave her the opening to walk away. She has already a few meters away from him when his booming voice resounded in the almost empty parking lot.
"Nicomaine. Get back here!"
There is this tone that always gets to Maine whenever Richard uses it. He has used it a few times before, when she is being stubborn and her stubbornness got her hurt, when a guy was so persistent and was being to handsy, just almost everytime that she is in danger.
