Those three words had sent me into a spiral, especially coming from her. The fact that I couldn't hear those words in person for the first time bugged me though. Then again just hearing it made up for the distance.
"Justin." A hand snapped in front of me.
"Dude you scared me!" I laughed, hitting Sam's chest.
"Sorry, you were just zoning out. You ready?" He dangled my keys in front of me.
"Yeah," I grinned as I snatched them away. "Let's go before they think we bailed."
"Hey uh, Ana's probably going to be there. La Cantera's kind of her stomping ground." He sighed once we got in and started driving.
"So?" I shrugged. "She's my ex."
"You know what I meant Jc, I don't want you hurting Selena again." Sam seemed on edge.
"I don't plan on it. Have you even talked to her since she left?" I hissed. How dare he think I would do that.
"Look, don't take it the wrong way. I just care about her, and Ana is very persuasive." He shrugged it off.
"You liked her didn't you?" I sighed. "I'm sorry man. If I had known someone else was into her I wouldn't of started anything."
"Nah it's cool. You make each other happy. I saw it on her face when she was here. Can I ask you something?"
"You just did." I laughed.
"Shut up ass." He laughed and smacked my arm. "Do you love her?"
"Uh, I think I do." I smiled. "I've never felt the way I do about her, she's a great girl."
"Does she love you?"
"She said she does, so I hope so."
"Do you think she'd move back here for you?"
"We haven't talked about it. She's coming back for Christmas though."
"Would you move there for her?"
"In a heart beat." I laughed. "Why so curious?"
"I don't know." He shrugged. "Part of me is jealous, part of me is happy for you two, but the other part is just curious in general."
"I know what you mean." I smiled. Sam was going through what I went through a long time ago. The want for someone to love him.
We had finally reached the mall and found a parking spot near the food court where Kian and Andrea were supposed to meet us. It was a little weird for me hanging out with them at first, but now it's pretty normal. Truth is I only befriended them because I missed Selena, and they were close to her.
"Justin! Sam!" Kian yelled waving us over to a table.
"You guys finally made it!" Andrea squealed. "Jc, do you know if Selena's busy right now?"
"You're quick." I laughed. "She's probably getting ready."
"Give me your phone." Andrea demanded, holding out her hand until I dropped my phone in it.
"What are you doing?" Kian, Sam, and I asked at the same time.
"Calling her!" She hushed us.
One ring.
Two ring.
"Hello?" Selena's sleepy voice answered.
"Good morning birthday girl!" Andrea squealed.
Birthday girl? Shit. Shit. SHIT. how could I forget?!
"Andrea?" I could hear her check her phone.
"Yeah sorry I took Jc's phone." Andrea have me an apologetic look after seeing my face.
"It's okay." Selena yawned. "What are y'all up to?"
"Just here at the mall. We all miss you. You're on speaker, the boys are here."
"Hey guys," she laughed. "Look I really want to talk but I just woke up and now I'm late. So I'll text you all?"
"Sounds good baby girl. Happy birthday." Andrea sung before hanging up. "You forgot didn't you." She pointed at me.
"No." I mumbled.
"Yes you did." She struck her face slightly with the palm of her hand.
"I'm not good at this stuff okay! It's not like I'm her boyfriend anyway." I shrugged.
"Do you want to be?" Andrea pushed.
"I don't know maybe." I shrugged pushing my hands into my pockets.
"If you don't know, let her go." Andrea pursed her lips and crossed her arms.
"She's right man," Kian of course backed her up. "Don't lead her on."
"Fine, then let me text her on her damn birthday that I don't want to be with her." I huffed and pulled my phone off the table. "Hey Sel, I'm not sure what I want with you so I'm going to let you go so I can figure it out. Happy birthday, have a nice life." I read aloud as I typed.
"Jc, what are you doing?" Sam grabbed my arm.
"And send." I snapped at Andrea as I pushed the send button.
"You're an ass Justin." Andrea spit before storming off, Kian hot on her heels.
"You fucked up man." Sam shook his head before following them.
**Selena's POV**
"Hey Sel, I'm not sure what I want with you so I'm going to let you go so I can figure it out. Happy birthday, have a nice life." I finished reading the text to Gina for at least the 5th time. "What the hell does that mean?" I wanted to throw my phone at a wall, but the fact that it was the only way to talk to Gina stopped me.
"Can I kick his ass? Honey I don't know how to tell you this but I think he just broke up with you, sort of." She let out a long sigh.
"I guess it makes sense though. He spends a few days with me, goes back home, realizes it won't work." I could feel the tears start to form.
"You'll be okay baby, I promise. I'm only a text or call away if you need me."
"I know, but hey, I think I just heard my dad pull up so can I call you back later?"
"Of course! Love you."
"Love you too."
Click.
I wiped away the tears and tried to loosen myself up again. Peeking out of my window I could see that my dad had indeed pulled up, and he wasn't alone. My mom, another man, and a boy climbed out of the car too. Quickly, I pulled on a pair of high waisted shorts and a gray crop top. My hair was already in a messy bun which left me to only having to pull on a pair of shoes before running down stairs.
"Daddy!" I chimed, running into his waiting arms.
"And me?" My mom laughed before she embraced the both of us. "This is Diego Duran and his son Daniel, Diego and I are working on the same movie so I thought I could invite them for dinner."
"Hello, I'm Selena." I smiled, shaking both of their hands briskly.
I glanced Daniel over and took note that he was extremely good looking, probably one of the most attractive guys I'd ever laid eyes on. Had the gods sent me a gift or what? I trailed the group inside and started helping my mom start dinner. Or at least I tried to until she shooed Daniel and I out of the kitchen so the adults could talk.
"So what now?" He asked, slightly swaying side to side, his hands pressed tightly in his pockets.
"We could go to the loft, watch tv or something." I shrugged, already walking up stairs. I wasn't about to drape myself over this insanely attractive greek god. Once in the loft I plopped down in the recliner and left Daniel the couch.
"So what do you do for fun?" He asked as I went through the TV guide.
"This. Read. Sleep." I shrugged.
"No friends or what?" He laughed.
"They don't live here."
"Make new ones."
"Not like I'm in school or anything."
"Go to sets. That's how I make friends, by going with my dad."
"Not my scene."
"I don't get you."
"What do you mean?"
"You're totally hot but you act like a loser."
"Thanks."
And so the chess match begins.
