The days seemed to zoom by. One day I was saying goodbye to the only friends I had, and the next I was in a completely different state. October ended while November rolled around. Thank gosh. Exactly two weeks from today, the 15th, I'd be turning 18. Sure I don't have anyone special to celebrate with, but I'm going to be legal! It's about time too.
"Selena!" My mom screamed, breaking up my thoughts.
"Where's the fire?" I laughed, getting up from my bed. I jumped once my feet hit the wooden floor, I wasn't expecting it to be so cold. The spiral staircase just outside my bedroom led me to the kitchen where my very angry looking mother huffed about.
"I've been calling you for five minutes already!" She scolded, crossing her arms over her chest. "I'm leaving. The house needs cleaning, and your assignments need to be done. We'll be back on Tuesday, that gives you a few days." She gave me a false grin before turning down the hallway to escape out of the front door.
Cleaning and doing school work on a Friday night? Gee what a blast. Ever since we moved my mom had been all business, and expected me to follow suit. My dad on the other hand had encouraged me to get out more and make new friends. To his disappointment I hadn't been out once since we got here.
That was going to change. Right now.
A smile crept on my face as I rushed upstairs and crashed into my room. I walked through my bathroom to my walk in closet. On the right, my winter tops hung while my summer clothes all sat in a box just underneath. On the left, my jeans, leggings, and sweatshirts hung up with my shoes on the floor underneath. Great organization that would be a wreck sooner or later.
I pulled a black and white baseball tee, and a pair of jeans from buckle that I had never worn before and stepped into my bathroom to change.
Normally changing was quick and painless, until this time when I looked into the mirror.
My stomach jiggled more than it did a few months ago. I let out a long sigh as I poked at the new fat. "Selena stop it." I hissed, pulling on the shirt without another thought.
My hair was tossed into a ponytail, and a Vera Bradley crossbody in Happy Snails was tossed over my shoulder before I found myself walking into the garage. Since we had moved here, my mom had been spoiling me to try and "fix" the years she's missed out on raising me. Hence the reason I was climbing into a brand new black Jeep Liberty. The only car I would let her buy. She had insisted on something crazy like a Bugatti or Mercedes but I wasn't having it.
I started the engine, turned up the radio, and started tapping my fingers along to the beat of the song that was playing. The short drive to the mall seemed to take longer with all of the traffic, of course! I can't really complain much though, I live in California, in a huge house, with my parents. That's all I need. Then on the other hand, something feels like it's missing. And that missing piece? That missing piece goes by the name of Justin Caylen.
