When I woke up, my head pounded. I groaned softly as I tried to move. Everything hurt. I could feel cold ground beneath me and I inhaled, the very effort making my head spin. My vision was fuzzy, but I could smell enough to give me clues of where I was. Wolf musk, concrete, old blood, sweat, and leather. I sat up slowly, holding my head.

"She's awake," came the sound of a male voice. When I managed to focus my eyes in the dimly lit room, I saw two men standing just across from me. "Let the queen alpha know."

I got to my feet and backed up against the wall, trying to keep my balance. One of the men, dark-headed with a ponytail, turned and headed for the staircase at the other side of the room. As the other, a tall and muscled redhead, came towards me, I tensed up, ready to defend myself.

"I wouldn't try it if I were you," I warned, gripping my hands into fists. "Who are you?"

"Come along nicely, hybrid, and I won't touch you," he said calmly, his voice flat.

"I have a name," I shot back. "Who are you?"

"You don't get to ask questions. And the queen alpha has plenty for you," he answered, gesturing me forward. "Let's go. I don't have all night."

I wanted to play the privilege card of being a Mezdor; but if I was in enemy territory, they would know that already. If they didn't, learning who I was would only cause more trouble for myself.

I thought he was taking me somewhere safe, I growled mentally, thinking of the mystery wolf. I inhaled a short whiff as I stepped forward towards the redhead. Musk. He was a wolf, too.

Red motioned me ahead of him and stayed right behind me. I glanced over my shoulder to see him nod towards the steps and I turned to face forward again, ascending up the stairs.

"I'm not going to let them harm you."

In truth, I wasn't hurt and they hadn't left me out in the sun to burn. But waking up in a concrete bunker of cages wasn't my idea of somewhere safe.

I stepped up onto the main level of the building and quickly began to look around. I felt naked in my silk pajamas and immediately crossed my arms over my chest, feeling exposed despite being covered in the tank top.

When I paused again, not sure where to go, Red put his hand on my shoulder and pushed me forward down the wide corridor. "Hey, easy," I hissed, glaring at him over my shoulder. I kept moving around a corner to see two more guards, one being the ponytailed wolf. They were standing at attention in front of a set of French double doors.

"Shut up, girl," the new guard barked at me as Ponytail opened the door. The new guard snatched me by my shoulder before I could get my arm up in defense. His grip was tight as he yanked me into the room so I would stumble.

I was tossed forward, landing in a sloppy crouch. I grunted, catching the weight on my bruised knees against the hard wood flooring. Ouch. I looked up to the dais, realizing I was in some sort of receiving room. A couple in their fifties sat in chairs on a raised dais. A third person stood just beside the woman's right side. I inhaled slowly through my nose to catch their scents. It was unmistakable; they were Wolves.

The woman was gorgeous with olive skin and dark chocolate hair that was twisted up into a chignon at the crown of her scalp. She wore a loose-fitting purple dress, her bare legs and designer heels on display. She took me in with cold, dark violet eyes that immediately put me on edge. She took a long sip from the wine glass in her grip and rested her chin on her other hand. She smirked, looking me over.

I glanced at the man on her left and guessed he was her husband. I noticed they both had wedding bands on their left hands. His thick black hair was combed back, streaked with grey, and he had a full beard that immediately made me think of a lumberjack. He was stocky in build like a tree trunk and wore a simple black button-down and black pants. His eyes were the same shade as his wife's. When I looked at him, he smiled, but it was an indifferent grin rather than the malice I felt coming from the woman beside him.
