I jolted awake from the darkness that had surrounded me for what had seemed like days. I looked around, finding my bedroom of Tanière du Loup. I touched my stomach from where I had been cut, but there was nothing there.
"Serenity?"
I looked up, seeing Jason suddenly at the edge of the bed. The lighting was different; everything was bathed in a soft, cold white light that reminded me of the full moon's or a fog light. I glanced back down to search for my injury. "Jay?" I breathed, my voice quiet.
"You're okay, sweetheart," he answered me. "I don't know how long we have, but I needed to make sure you're still alive. I've been trying to reach you."
I frowned, looking around the room again. "I'm dreaming? Why aren't we in the meadow?"
He sighed and approached me finally, walking around to the side of my bed and stepping up the dais. "Because that's not where your mind was. It took me hours to find you. Are you okay?"
"No, where am I? Where are you?" I asked, moving out of the center of the bed to get closer to him. "Jason, where are our bodies?"
"They took me back downstairs after you were put out. I tried so hard to get loose, but..." He trailed off his words, looking away. "I'm sorry, I'm so sorry, Seren. I failed you. I should have done better. I should've protected you."
I shook my head and gripped his arms as I rested my forehead against his stomach. I didn't know what to say to comfort him.
"You were so weak and there was nothing I could do. I can just feel you over our bond, and I can't fix it," he went on, as if my silence told him I was angry with him for a lack of effort. "I wanted to rip their throats out for cutting you like that."
"I'll be okay," I said at last.
"I'm sorry, Serenity. When I get my hands on Page—"
"Jason," I interrupted him, looking up at him. "It will be okay. We'll be okay."
"Serenity, your body isn't going to last much longer at the rate you're going. I can't help you from the basement," he insisted. "If you don't get blood, or if they cut you again—"
"I know," I answered him, gripping his arms tightly to make him stop talking.
There was a loud banging noise that filled the room and we both began to look around to find the source. I could feel it in my temples as the sound reverberated down my spine. I winced when it sounded louder, echoing directly above my head.
"No," I breathed, knowing it was in my reality.
"Serenity," Jason said, his voice drowned out by the noise. "Serenity, you need to wake up. I'll find you again. I promise. I will find you."
"No, Jason, wait!" I called over the noise.
I jerked awake again, finding my body still restrained to the table. I looked around, now surrounded by the harsh, fluorescent light of the medical lab. The banging continued for a few seconds longer as the last echo of the noise filtered through the room, seeming to make every metal surface vibrate. I blinked hard, trying to get centered again in reality.
"Rise and shine, half-blood. I can't have you conferring with your mate downstairs," Page's voice sounded from somewhere in front of me.
I shook my head slightly, trying to focus. As I settled into my body, I gasped when pain filled me. My muscles were like molten lead and my arms screamed from supporting my body weight. My spine was tight with tension. I could feel my bones straining beneath my muscles and my skin crawled from the silver injection I had been given. I glanced down to look at my stomach, hoping I'd healed, but I couldn't see; my vision was still hazy.
