The Following Week...

Jason spun the phone around in his hand and then checked the time on it before flipping through the messages again. Five days and no responses from Serenity. Not a text, email, or even a thought sent across their bond. It's not like her.

He scrolled through his contacts, finding the number for the Portland coven in seconds. Part of him didn't want to call and alarm Elizabeth and Marcus or Luce and Jenny. But if he hadn't heard from her in five days, what were the chances they had? Everything had seemed fine when she left, better than fine. But the impending silence put him on edge. It didn't seem like her, despite her adventurous past.

And the last time she had gone silent on him...

Where are you?, he cast out, hoping to get an answer.

Jason growled to himself softly and got up from his desk. He paced the sitting room of his suite before walking into the bedroom and to her adjoining door. He pushed it open slowly to peek inside, wishing she'd be there, stretched across her bed with a book or curled up asleep in the early morning hours. But all was still inside her apartment. The bed had been made and her clothes were gone, leaving an empty place and what felt like an empty home overall to him.

"They're going to hate me for being the one to stir up trouble," he grumbled to himself. "Again."

Without giving himself another moment to agonize over the hesitancy, he dialed the number. The West Coast would be nine hours behind, which meant the coven would just be getting into the full swing of the night's duties. He walked into her bedroom and sat down on the foot of the bed, listening to the rings as he tried not to count each of them.

"Williamson and Associates. How may I direct your call?" came the standard greeting.

"Hi. Elizabeth Bartholomeu, please. It's Jason Hellmuth," he said calmly, forcing himself to keep his voice even.

"She's currently unavailable, King Alpha. Is there a message I can leave for her?" the receptionist asked.

"Then is Marcus Augustus available?" he asked.

"Umm, I think so. One moment."

He sighed his relief the moment the line beeped to show he was put on hold.

"This is Augustus," came Marc's voice, and in the background Jason could hear Felicity. Seconds later, he heard Jenny saying something to the toddler.

"Marc, it's Jason," he said, bowing his head forward.

"King Alpha," Marc greeted. "It's awfully early for you overseas. I'm surprised you're even awake."

Jason chewed his bottom lip for a moment, not sure how to spit out the question he had. "My whole inner clock has been thrown a little off, after a few weeks of entertaining here. With Serenity gone, I don't have much of a schedule right now."

There was a chuckle from the American second-in-command on the other side of the phone line. "That I can understand," he said. "When Elizabeth is away, I don't think Fee and I know what to do with ourselves unless she's left us an itinerary... What can I help you with?"

"I just wanted to reach out. I haven't heard from Serenity since Saturday this past weekend. I don't want to alarm you, but I was hoping perhaps maybe you've heard from her. I know she's preparing for the summit this week, but I just need to be sure she's okay," he finally got out, trying to maintain a composed tone.

Silence on the other end filled the line before Felicity made a soft sound and then giggled.

"Saturday?" Marcus asked finally.
