"So, why are we going out to the city?" I asked, ducking my head behind Jason's shoulder as wind pushed against the shield over my face.
He slowed the motorcycle as we drove down the main drag of the neighborhood. "I want to be able to understand how vampires interact in society around humans. Wolves tend to stick to the woods and countryside. Your lifestyle is very different from ours."
I sighed, feeling disappointed. I had hoped this was for us to make up from our fight. I leaned back to enjoy the bright stars above us that still shimmered noticeably above the street lights. "You want to understand how my world works and how we hunt humans."
It wasn't a question.
"Basically, yes. I thought if I understood how it works, maybe I can better understand the best way to teach you how to combine both sets of your instincts."
My eyes stayed on the stars. I inhaled the smell of the city, finding myself missing Europe and traveling with my cousins.
Jason pulled into a fairly empty parking lot and chose a space. He killed the engine and then flipped the kickstand down to hold the bike's weight. "Think of this as you teaching me something."
I clenched my back teeth, not liking the idea. I hadn't hunted in years. In Europe, it was forbidden. My mother had implemented a donor system for our U.S. coven house so no one would get caught hunting or losing control. Donors were the only way we drank blood, and hunting had become a worst-case scenario practice.
I climbed off the motorcycle and rolled my shoulders backwards to shake out the stiffness. Grabbing the strap to my helmet, I unfastened it and pulled it off. My blonde locks tumbled down around my shoulders haphazardly and I huffed a breath to knock a strand off my cheek. "Are you sure about this?" I asked, glancing over my shoulder as the Land Rover with Thomas and Canaan pulled into the parking lot a few spaces down from us.
Jason chuckled as he took his helmet off and sat it on the seat of the bike, not noticing my unease. "You keep telling me you can't explain how to be a vampire. Why not? And, this way, we get off the property for a break. So long as you don't try to do something stupid."
I rolled my eyes at his joke. "Alright then. But this spot isn't the one to do it at," I answered, gesturing to the relaxing country pub in front of us. I turned to look across the road at the bars lining the street. I noticed a few people getting ID's checked in the doorway off the alley along a strip of darkened shop windows. When the door opened by the bald guy serving as a bouncer, I could hear music and I smiled. There were flashes of lights inside and it was loud. And very dark. "That one is."
"That one?" Jason asked, stepping around the bike to come stand beside me. He frowned slightly and glanced down at me. He wasn't so sure about a spot where he couldn't use all his senses.
That's where the wolf side failed. A vampire didn't need all her senses to find the perfect candidate.
"You wanna see how a vampire hunts? You go to the darkest, loudest bar where people disappear easily. Easier to hide, and most of the time everyone's so drunk that they don't even notice and they don't care," I explained.
Not waiting for a response, I unzipped my borrowed leather jacket to show off my electric blue tank top. It was cut a little too short to show off my mid-drift and was a nice touch with my black leather pants. I strode forward to the sidewalk, bypassing Thomas and Canaan. My heeled boots clicked on the cement and I paused when I reached the street. I shivered slightly, despite that it was still warmer in the lower elevations. If he wanted a show, I'd give him a better idea of exactly what vampires could be.
"Seren, wait," Jason warned, catching up to me. "You don't even have an I-D to get into bars."
I smirked and glanced at him before I looked both ways. I began to cross after a black Ford drove past us. "Just give me space. I don't need you over my shoulder to convince this guy to let me in."
